Problem and Setting
Grade 3 students often struggle with reading and writing skills, hindering their academic

progress and overall literacy development. These challenges may include difficulties in reading

fluency, comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and written expression. It is crucial to identify the

specific literacy challenges faced by Grade 3 students and explore effective strategies to address these

challenges, thereby laying a strong foundation for their literacy skills (Smith & Johnson, 2022)

literacy development plays a vital role in setting a strong foundation for students' academic

success. Effective instructional strategies that focus on phonics instruction, vocabulary development,

comprehension strategies, and writing instruction can significantly enhance Grade 3 students' reading

and writing skills (Beck, McKeown, & Kucan, 2002).

Research has shown that Grade 3 serves as a pivotal point for literacy development,

influencing students' overall academic achievement and cognitive abilities (Thompson & Davis,

2019). Students who struggle with literacy in Grade 3 often face challenges throughout their academic

journey, emphasizing the importance of early intervention and targeted instruction. By implementing

evidence-based interventions, educators can lay the groundwork for future literacy achievements,

empowering students to become confident and proficient readers and writers. The development of

strong reading and writing skills is essential for Grade 3 students as they progress in their academic

journey. Grade 3 marks a critical period for literacy development, as students transition from basic

reading skills to more complex comprehension and written expression. The acquisition of proficient

reading and writing skills during this stage is crucial for future academic success (Smith & Johnson,

2022).

This challenges in developing strong reading and writing skills, which can hinder their

academic progress and future success. The lack of effective instructional strategies specifically

tailored to address the unique needs of Grade 3 students may contribute to these difficulties.

Therefore, there is a need to identify the specific literacy challenges faced by Grade 3 students and

explore effective strategies that can lay a solid foundation for their reading and writing skills.

Therefore, there is a need to identify the specific literacy challenges faced by Grade 3 students and

study is anchored on the Theory based on the sociocultural theory of Lev Vygotsky (1978), this theory

emphasizes the role of language, social interactions, and cultural practices in shaping students' reading

and writing skills. The Socio-Interactive Literacy Theory proposes that Grade 3 students' literacy

development is significantly influenced by social interactions and cultural contexts.

Problem
Literacy is a fundamental skill that lays the groundwork for academic success and lifelong
learning. Proficient reading and writing abilities are essential for students to access information,
communicate effectively, and participate fully in society. Grade 3 is a critical stage in a student's
literacy journey as they transition from basic reading skills to more complex comprehension and
written expression. (Smith, J. R., & Johnson, A. B. 2022) However, many Grade 3 students face
challenges in developing these foundational literacy skills, which can have long-term implications for
their educational achievements. This action research study is to explore effective strategies that foster
Grade 3 students' reading and writing skills, thereby laying a strong foundation for their literacy
development. By investigating the specific literacy challenges faced by Grade 3 students and
identifying evidence-based interventions, this study aims to contribute valuable insights to educators
and inform instructional practices in Grade 3 classrooms.
