Skills of Grade 3 Pupils at Sisay Elementary School

Introduction:

The focus of this action research is to assess the impact of the I CARE (I Count and Read Every Day)
program on enhancing the literacy and numeracy skills of Grade 3 pupils at Sisay Elementary School.
The initiative aims to integrate daily counting and reading activities to create a holistic approach to
skill development in both literacy and numeracy.

Research Objectives:

1. Evaluate the effectiveness of the I CARE program in improving the literacy skills of Grade 3
pupils.
2. Assess the impact of the I CARE program on enhancing the numeracy skills of Grade 3 pupils.
3. Identify the students' engagement and attitudes towards daily counting and reading
activities.
4. Examine the potential challenges and opportunities associated with implementing the I CARE
program.

Research Design:

The research will follow a mixed-methods approach, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative
data collection methods. The study will be conducted over a period of three months, with the
following key components:

1. Baseline Assessment: Conduct pre-program assessments to determine the initial literacy

and numeracy levels of Grade 3 pupils.
2. Implementation of I CARE Program: Introduce the I CARE program, which includes daily
counting and reading activities. Teachers will integrate these activities into the existing
curriculum, ensuring alignment with educational standards.
3. Data Collection:
 Quantitative: Administer regular assessments to measure changes in literacy and
numeracy skills throughout the program.
 Qualitative: Conduct interviews and surveys with teachers, students, and parents to
gather insights on engagement, attitudes, and perceived benefits of the I CARE
program.
4. Analysis of Data:
 Quantitative data will be analyzed using statistical methods to determine the impact
on literacy and numeracy scores.
 Qualitative data will be analyzed thematically to identify patterns, challenges, and
opportunities.

Expected Outcomes:
1. Improved literacy and numeracy skills among Grade 3 pupils.
2. Enhanced engagement and positive attitudes toward counting and reading activities.
3. Identification of potential challenges and opportunities for program refinement and
scalability.

Recommendations:

Based on the findings, recommendations will be provided for the continuous improvement and
potential expansion of the I CARE program. These recommendations will consider adjustments to the
program structure, teacher training, and parental involvement to maximize its effectiveness.

Conclusion:

The I CARE initiative represents an innovative approach to fostering literacy and numeracy skills
among Grade 3 pupils at Sisay Elementary School. Through systematic assessment and analysis, this
action research aims to contribute valuable insights to the ongoing efforts in educational
enhancement, ultimately benefiting the students and creating a foundation for lifelong learning.
