CHAPTER 3

METHODS

In this research study, the researcher will adopt the quantitative method of research to examine

and assess the on-going individual and institutional reform efforts made in Kiamba District I to address

the need to equip math teachers with the pedagogical content knowledge and skills in teaching math, to

explore best practices, to identify the different challenges encountered, and to suggest future directions.

Furthermore, this study attempts to investigate the teachers’ preparation, challenges, and coping

mechanisms while conducting distance learning in teaching Mathematics.

Research Instrument

The research instrument is a researcher-made questionnaire. This instrument will be divided into

four parts: (1) collecting information about the demographic profile of respondents, (2) efforts made by

the institutions in Kiamba District I to address the needs of teachers in teaching Mathematics (3)

challenges encountered by teachers during the conduct of distance learning and (4) future directions may

be taken toward more effective institutionalization of distance learning to make math education relevant

and meaningful.

The questionnaire consisted of ___ closed-ended questions targeted to math teachers in Kiamba

District I. The questions included background information about the math teachers (e.g., grade levels

taught); the timing, content, and format of all training they received, inclusive of preservice education and

professional development; their perceived challenges teaching in an online environment; and the type of

professional development that would help them address those challenges. For the purposes of this study,

professional development is defined as activities aimed at increasing teachers’ capabilities in distance

learning instruction. This study further distinguishes between structured professional development, which
includes activities such as attending a workshop or graduate course, and unstructured professional

development, which includes activities such as mentoring, participating in online forums, and conducting

Internet searches.

Respondents

The respondents of the study will be teachers who are teaching Mathematics in elementary level

coming from different public schools located in Kiamba District I. The random sampling technique will

be utilized to gather responses from teachers regardless of their gender and length of teaching experience.

Data Gathering

Data gathering procedure will be done through Google forms, which will be sent to the respective

schools and subsequently sent to the teachers via email. Respondents will be requested to complete the

survey within one week from the date of the issuance.

Data Analysis

Descriptive statistics will be used to describe the demographic profile, efforts made by the institutions in

Kiamba District I to address the needs of teachers in teaching Mathematics, distance learning education

readiness, and its challenges.
