Development of Cognitive Skills of

the Teacher Education Students”
Rizza M. Pacheo and Jamicajoyce Velasco
Chapter 1
Introduction
People are increasingly embracing the advantages of
e-learning. Any education that takes place through
electronic media is referred to as "e-learning" or
"online learning." This is commonly done through the
internet.

Online Learning has become a “must” for educational

institutions and corporations.
Introduction

The ability to learn new information or skill

considerably has far more educational opportunities
than ever before. Education's scope has changed to far
broader horizons than anyone had imagined.
Statement of the Problem

The study aimed to determine the impact of

online learning on the development of
cognitive skills of the teacher education
students. Specifically, it sought to answer the
following questions:
Statement of the Problem

1. What are cognitive skills?

2. What factors affect the development of cognitive
skills?
3. How does online learning affect the development of
cognitive skills?
4. What is the extent of the effect of online learning on
the development of cognitive skills?

Scope and Limitations

The study was limited to students in St. Mary’s

College Quezon City Campus. This study only
included Teacher Education students who are in the
Tertiary level during the school year of 2021-2022.
The research focused on the impact of online
learning on development of cognitive skills of
Teacher Education students.
Significance of the Study
The results of the study will be of great benefit to the
following:`
1. Students - They are the ones who
are exposed to online distance
learning and can evaluate its
effectiveness.
2. Teachers - They are the ones who
facilitate and supervise the
activities occurring in online
distance learning.
Significance of the Study
The results of the study will be of great benefit to the
following:`
3. School Administrators – They
are the ones who are responsible
for cultivating leadership within
the school community while
effectively managing teachers,
students, and mentors to develop
a strong and effective learning
environment through online
learning.
Significance of the Study
The results of the study will be of great benefit to the

4. Future Researchers – This
research will be a useful reference
for future researchers who would
plan to conduct any related study
that will further determine how
online learning can affect the
development of cognitive skills of
the Teacher Education students.

Research Design/Method
This study used the descriptive research method. According to
QuestionPro (2020) descriptive research is defined as a research
method that describes the characteristics of the population or
phenomenon studied. This method was chosen because it allows for
the researcher to collect a high-quality and honest data on the factors
and impacts of online learning on the respondents. Specifically, the
researcher was able to determine the impact of online learning on the
development of cognitive skills of Teacher Education Program
students using the descriptive method. Together with this method is
also the use of the survey questionnaire.
Population and Sample of the Study

The target population of this research are individuals from

the college department particularly the Teacher Education
Program students. The sampling technique used in this study
was purposive sampling. This survey sampling technique
requires researchers to have prior knowledge of the purpose
of their studies in order to properly select and approach
eligible participants for surveys conducted through online
survey platforms (Alchemer, 2021). A sample of forty (40)
people were chosen from a population of 43.
Data Collection Instrument

The researchers will use a 5-point frequency Likert

scale and level of consideration Likert scale
questions to determine the respondent’s answer.
Data Gathering Procedure

Survey questionnaires were distributed to the

respondents through the application Google forms
and then collected by the researchers afterwards.
Some applications such as Messenger and
Microsoft Teams were also used to send the
survey questionnaires to the selected respondents.
Statistical Tool/s
The data was analyzed and interpreted using the following

Ethical Considerations
In conducting this research study, the researcher will follow the
necessary ethical considerations in the data collection to avoid issues
that may affect the overall results of the study.

1. The researchers will be honest in the report data, results,

procedures and publications status on the respondents’ answer.

2. The respondents' privacy and anonymity would be prioritized in

this study. The confidentiality of the information gathered will
be guaranteed.
Ethical Considerations
3. The researchers will be avoiding bias in experimental design,
data interpretation, grant writing, expert testimony and other
aspects of research where objective is expected or required.
4. The respondents will get consent letters outlining the study's
purpose and objectives. They have the option of accepting or
declining the survey, as well as withdrawing from the study.

5. The researchers will avoid discrimination against colleagues or

students on the basis of sex, race, ethnicity or other factors that are
not related to their scientific competence and integrity.
