Mathematics is now taught in the first language of the child. The absence of
instructional materials written in the first language poses a problem to teachers in
teaching the subject. It has been observed that learners having differences in
mathematical ability have difficulty grasping the contents of the subject.
On the other hand, the learners who are encountering difficulty in the subject
need to be remediated so they will attain the required competencies in the subject. In
the light of the serious problems associated with slow learning in Mathematics,
educators need to use appropriate instructional materials as shored up by the
instructional theory. Instructional theory prescribes how to help people learn better
(Reigeluth, 2012), thus suggests the utilization of interventions. The focus of this
theory is on how to structure material for promoting the education of the people.
Such materials include the instructional materials. Instructional materials are
importanttools in education. Examples of these tools are workbook supplements,
manuals, guidebooks which help clarify the concepts, principles, and techniques
contained in the textbooks, by making the student undergo exercises applying the
lessons learned. They also provide means of checking whether the students have
understood the lessons taught in the classroom. (Ledda, 2006) Likewise,
Salandanan (2001) emphasized that instructional materials offer the best means in
which a teacher can provide direction in her student’s daily search for new
In the same manner, Robert Slavin said that students need practice exercises
like Math Drill to help new information into long term memory and integrate new with
old learning. Practice problem may come from flash cards modules, work text,
textbook and teacher-made materials. Practice in the form of seatwork can be helpful
for students if it is given for limited period of time (Manzano, 2004). Studies showed
that the use of an instructional material plays a very significant role in enhancing the
memory level of the students and makes the teaching – learning process interesting.
Different studies have shown that the use of instructional materials successfully
decreased the least mastered skills in math subjects; thus, poor achievement was
enhanced. Likewise, the studies of Wenceslao (2009), Quillao (2014), and Rivera
(2015) recommended the utilization of instructional materials in Science and
Mathematics to improve classroom performance. It is imperative therefore, that
adequate instructional materials which can serve as practice exercises will be
provided to the learners to ensure mastery of the different competencies.
Regarding this, the researcher believe that the Grade-One learners section
Maagap of Oogong Elementary School, Santa Cruz District, Division of Laguna are
not survived from the problem of low mathematics performance as reflected in their
Elementary Grade Mathematics Assessment ( EGMA ) and First Periodical Results
in Mathematics. In EGMA of Grade 1- Maagap, it appeared that 8 out 37 or 21.6%
are in numerate level, 21 out of 37 or 56.8 percent are in low numerate and 8 out of
37 or 21.6% are in non-numerate level. In First Quarterly Examination, the learners
obtained 59% which is very far from 75% as the target MPS. This result alarms the
class adviser that is why she decided to conduct action research so that she can
look for the solution on how the performance of her learners in Math increase. Since
that the researcher believes that the interventions mentioned above based from the
other studies can really help her learners to enhance their performance, she will
apply this. The action research she will conduct aims to improve the basic
Mathematics operation skills of the grade one learners, section Maagap through
remediation, Math drills and the use of modules. It will look into the level of
performance of grade one learners before and after the implementation of the
strategy. And also the significant differences between the pretest and posttest which
will be used in gathering the data needed in the study. The materials and activities to
be used will prepare by the class adviser and at the same time researcher of this
study.
III. PROPOSED INNOVATION, INTERVENTION AND STRATEGY
The school aims high on promoting and helping those learners who feels bad
times towards learning Mathematics . The school continues find any means and
exerting too many efforts to reach out those individuals in need to ensure that the
learners may take place in some way or another.
In Oogong Elementary School, the Mathematics Coordinator and at the same
time the Grade One adviser decided to make an interventions for her learners after
she found out that most of her learners are lag behind in mathematics based on the
result of first and second quarterly test. The researcher will conduct remediation,
giving math drills and distibution of modules everday. This will be conducted until the
post test given on the second week of June 2023
The respondents of this study were the thirty-six Grade One learners, section
__________ of Oogong Elementary School, Santa Cruz District for the school year
2022-2023 duly recognized by the class adviser and the school principal. They will
be chosen because the grade one section ______ is the advisory class of the
researcher.
B. Data Gathering Methods
The pretest and posttest will be used in gathering the data needed in the
study. There will be two sets of 30 multiple choice teacher-made questions
specifically designed for grade one. The pretest and posttest will be subjected to
content validity. It will review and validate by the school pricipal. The pretest will be
conducted on the 3rd week of February while the post test will administer at the 2nd
week of June 2023. This is to determine the improvement in the learner’s
performance after the intervention. The grade one learners will have remedial
classse from Monday to Friday at 1:00 to 1:30 in the afternoon to improve their basic
mathematics operation skills through the use of Remediation, Math Drills and
Modules intervention.
The researcher will conduct the action research from the third week of
february until last 3rd week of June 2023. The researcher will ask the approval of
the school head for the implementation of the action research . Once that the data is
being collected, the researcher will calculate and interpret the result of the action
research
