What is change? How does change affects human life? Do we create change? Change is
natural and inevitable.
It refers to a significant shift or modification in the lifestyle of a society.
Brings about transformation of its social structure, physical, cultural, economic and the
institution.
Defined by sociologist as an alteration in the basic structures of society or the social group.
According the structural functionalism theory, social change should serve the best interests of
society with the goal of maintaining equilibrium and balance within the social system.
Conflict theory admits that social change happens suddenly when conflict boils over.
Sociologists define social change as changes in human interactions and relationships that
transform cultural and social institutions.
“Everything Changes”, this principle applies to every phenomenon.
Characteristics of Social Change
Social change is inevitable/unavoidable or it will really happen
Social change is sometimes intentional but often unplanned.
Social change is controversial. It can bring both positive and negative consequences.
Example is the advancement of technology that brought us positive/negative result.
Social change is natural.
Social changes matter than others.
Theories of Social Change
1. Evolutionary theory believes that societies gradually change from simple to complex. It
claims that social change means progress.
2. Cyclical theory focuses on the rise and fall of civilization. Its birth, maturity, old age, and
death.
3. Functional theory states that every institution must do their function in order to create a
harmonious relationship.
4. Conflict theory was first developed by Karl Marx
It emphasizes change in the society
Society is constantly in conflict over limited resources, that drives social change
Social order is maintained by domination and power
Individuals and group should work together to maximize their wealth and power
Sees society as divided along lines of economic class, the poor and the rich class
The aim of conflict theory is to distribute equally the goods and services to the individual

Technology such as many inventions that advanced the society.
Population any increase/decrease in population size may disrupt social life.
Cultural innovation includes discovery, invention and diffusion.
Examples of social change
Social change often occurs as a result of social movements. There are countless examples
throughout history in every country on earth. Some of the most famous (many of which are
ongoing and/or evolving) include:
The Reformation
The Civil Rights movement
The feminist movement
The LGBTQ+ rights movement
