Instruction: Plot the following points in the cartesian plane and measure the distance
between two points.

2. Interaction
 Discussion
Lesson 1: Pythagorean Theorem and the Distance Formula
In this lesson, the following key terms and concepts will be discussed:
• Pythagorean Theorem – states that in any given right triangle, the square of the
length of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the lengths of the other
two sides

In a right triangle ∆𝐴𝐵𝐶, if the measures of the legs are 𝑎 and 𝑏, and the measure of the
hypotenuse is 𝑐, it follows that a² + b² = c².

Example:

To find the hypotenuse of a right triangle whose legs measure 3 m and 4 m, we

follow these steps.

Let 𝑎 = 3 and 𝑏 = 4. Substitute the given to the formula a² + b² = c².

3² + 4² = c²
9 + 16 = c²
25 = c²
√25 = √c²
5=c
c=5

• Distance Formula – it is used to find the distance between two distinct points
on the Cartesian plane.
