2 The diagram below shows a simple pendulum swinging from X to Y. It is recorded that the
pendulum takes 0.20 s to swing from X to Y.

5 Planks of wood delivered to a building are all 15 cm wide and 5.0 cm thick but they have different
lengths. They are made of wood with a density of 0.90 g/cm3.

11 John was tasked to find the diameter of a boiling tube. He used a pair of vernier calipers to
measure the external diameter of a boiling-tube. The diagram below shows the reading on the
pair of vernier calipers.

(c) John took only one measurement of the external diameter of the boiling tube. His teacher,
Mr Tan told him that his measurement is likely to be inaccurate.
Explain why Mr Tan said so and suggest a precaution that John can take.

12 Scientists have investigated rocks that were brought back to Earth from the Moon.
The rocks were investigated on Earth. When testing one sample, the density of the rock was
found to be 5.5 g/cm 3. The volume of the rock was 1.2 m 3. The gravitational field strength on Earth
is 10 N/kg and on the Moon is 1.6 N/kg.
(b) Calculate the weight of the same rock sample when it was on the Moon.
13 Peter drove his car from his house to a nearby coffee shop.
He accelerated at an increasing rate from rest to a speed of 12 m/s in 4.0 s. Then he kept a
constant speed for the next 8.0 s before applying the brakes and decelerating at a constant rate
to a stop in 8.0 s.
(a) Plot the speed-time graph for Peter’s car journey in the grid below. [2]
(b) Calculate the deceleration for Peter’s car in the last 8.0 s.
14 The diagram below shows the speed-time graph of a rocket taking off from Earth.

(b) Calculate
(i) the total distance travelled by the rocket in the first 108 s ,
(ii) the average speed of the rocket in during the first 108 s.
15 A box remained at rest on a table with 2 forces, F and R, acting on it as shown in the diagram
below.

R = …………………. N [1]
(b) The box was given a hard push and reached a speed of 2.5 m/s. Forces, F and R, are
applied on the box again. The forces are of equal magnitude and opposite in direction as
shown below.
