THE LONGEST, THE LOWEST AND THE DRIEST

§ You might know that Mount Everest holds a record. It is the highest mountain in the
1
world. But do you know about any other places in the world that hold records?
The longest river in the world is the Nile River. It starts in the center of Africa,
2
5 continues through ten countries, and flows1 into the Mediterranean Sea. Ninety-five percent
of the people in Egypt2 live close to the Nile. They drink the water from the river and catch
fish. The Nile is full of fish and other animals. Farmers live next to the river because the
ground is good for growing food.
The lowest place on Earth is the Dead Sea, between Israel and Jordan. It is 420 meters
10
3
below sea level3. The Jordan River flows into the Dead Sea but no water flows out. That is
why the Dead Sea is very salty. Fish cannot live in the water, people cannot drink the water,
and food does not grow nearby. Many tourists go there for a vacation because the weather is
warm most of the year. Another reason tourists visit the Dead Sea is that it helps them feel
better.
15
The driest place in the world is the Atacama Desert4 in South America. Only one
4
millimeter of rain falls each year in the center of the desert. Some places in the Atacama
Desert never get any rain at all.
