A GREEN FUTURE
Green energy is used today because it is clean and safe, and can be found everywhere.
1
Scientists continue to introduce new ways to use this technology. What are some of these
uses around the world today?
Many children around the world live in villages without electricity. At night, these
5 2
children can’t do their homework or read because they have no lights. In some countries in
Africa, there is a solution to this problem. The children receive backpacks 1 with solar panels2
on them. While they walk to school, the solar panels collect power from the sun and send it
to a lamp3 in the backpack. In the evening when it is dark, students turn on the lamp. It gives
them enough light to do homework and read.

Green energy is very important in Holland. This country uses the power of the wind to
3
create electricity. In fact, the biggest wind farm in the world is in the sea, near the coast. It
produces electricity for millions of homes. Another use of this electricity is for the train
service. About 600,000 passengers ride on these trains every day.
15
Israel also uses green energy. Over seventy years ago, in the 1950s, people started using
4
the energy of the sun to create hot water. Today, solar energy is also used for street lamps
and digital signs at bus stops. Another example of the use of green energy is the “eTree” in
Ramat Hanadiv. This is a solar panel that looks like a tree. It uses energy from the sun to
provide Wi-Fi, a phone charger4, and cold water to drink. The eTree provides shade during
20
the day and light at night, so it is always pleasant to sit there.
With modern technology, inventors and scientists all over the world are working hard to
5
make our world green.
