Introductory Message!
Welcome to TLE 10- AFA - (Organic Agriculture Production)!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Iloilo and Dep Ed Regional Office VI - Western Visayas through
the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is developed to
guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping the
learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The TLE 10 -AFA - (Organic Agriculture Production) Activity Sheet will help
you facilitate the teaching learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning
Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and
learner. This will be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease
the independent learning.

For the learner:

The TLE 10 -AFA - (Organic Agriculture Production) Activity Sheet is

developed to help you continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning
material provides you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent
learning. Being an active learner carefully read and understands the instructions then
perform the activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your
facilitator on the agreed schedule.

requirements.

II. Background Information for Learners
This instructional material contains activities on how to carry out
processing of compost fertilizer based on production requirements. However, if you
have problems you can contact your teacher and request for assistance and
guidance.

The processing of compost fertilizer is carried out from the time when it is
ready for harvest. The activities in processing harvested compost will depend on how
it will be utilized after harvest.

How to Harvest

Harvesting mature compost depends on what method of composting you

used. In simple traditional methods and basket method where there is only one bin,
Just remove the cover and top portion of the pile. Using shovel, scoop the fully
decomposed compost into a container such as old sacks.
However, if you have several bins, just use one section or bin to let not matured
compost to fully mature and new materials or you can also just empty the bin if all
materials were fully decomposed.

Worm Bin Harvesting

When harvesting vermicompost, push all of the materials to about one half side
of the bed then remove any large pieces of undecomposed materials. In the vacated
side of the bed, put new layer of substrates. After 2 to 3 weeks the worms will
transfer to the new side where there is food. Remember not to add new materials to
the side of matured compost so that the worms will stay in the area with food. So
when the worms have already left the matured vermicompost, you can now remove
the compost and replace it with new beddings. In order to facilitate the transfer or
migration of worms to the new bedding, cover this portion of the bed.

There are a few different ways you can use to harvest your vermicompost.

Manual Harvesting –
This method is used if you want to gather only small amount of vermicast
just a few days after the compost pile is stacked with worms.
At this time the pile may not be fully matured but you can harvest vermicast .
Just collect the vermicast by using your hand or with the use of hand shovel
scoop the compost and transfer directly into a container. While doing this, you can
pick out few worms and return them to the compost bn.

Screening or Sieving – This method can have used any time of the day even
without sunlight. Separating the vermicast, substrate and worms can be easy. It can
be done manually by using a screen used to sieve sand for masonry. The tool can
be made of fine mesh wire nailed on wood for easy handling.

Processing of compost fertilizer

To process compost fertilizer produced in a compost bin/compost pile,

observe the following steps/procedures:
1. Collecting. Gather/Collect the ready to harvest compost fertilizer
from the compost bin and place in a partially shaded area for air
drying process.
2. Drying. Air dry the compost fertilizer for 2 – 3 days until the finished
product can already crumbles in your hand.
3. Sieving/Screening. Using a locally made sieving tool (made of fine
mesh wire nailed on wood for easy handling), perform manual sieving

pr of the product in order separate the big particles to produce a good
quality compost fertilizer.
4. Bagging. Place the processed compost fertilizer in a bagging
container either in sack or in plastic bags.
5. Labelling. For marketing purposes, label the packing container
which includes the following:
Business name and location
Name of the product
Net content
Nutrient content/analysis
6. Storing. Keep the finished product in a safe storage area free from
contamination.

If compost will be utilized for mulching or fertilizing vegetable and fruit

tree crops, the compost after collecting can be directly applied to the garden
or farm. While vermicompost that will be utilized in the production of vermi tea
can be processed by following the procedure below:

VermiTea or Compost Tea Making

Materials:
Compost or vermicast
Molasses or brown sugar (muscovado
Water
Net or Katsa
Plastic container
1. Prepare 1 kilo vermi cast or compost and I kilo brown sugar oe ½ kilo
molasses
2. Put it inside the net bag or katsa
3. Soak in 20 liters of water. Cover the container.
4. Place in area exposed to sunlight.
5. The tea can be used after 12 to 24 hours of soaking but if you want
fermented tea this can be brewed for 7 days.
6/ The tea can be applied by spraying or drenching to the crops.
