Periodic Table Assignment

INSTRUCITONS:
 Using a variety of sources answer the questions in this handout. You will not find all of the answers to these
questions so look around!
 Your grade will be based upon the effort that you put forth as well as the final product turned in.

1) Using different color pencils or crayons, color the areas in the blank periodic chart where you would locate:

a.) Metals g.) Alkaline Earth Metals m.) Solids

b.) Nonmetals h.) Transition Elements n.) Liquids
c.) Inert Gases i.) Period o.) Gases
d.) Halogen j.) Groups p.) Naturally Occurring Radioactive Elements
e.) Metalloids k.) Lanthanoid Series q.) Man Made Elements
f.) Alkali Metals l.) Actinoid Series r.) New Elements found during your lifetime

2) Discuss the general properties of metals.

Generally, metals have high melting points, high density, and are good conductors. Physically, they are shiny, ductile,
and often malleable.

3) Discuss the general properties of nonmetals.

Nonmetals have low melting points and low density and are poor conductors of heat and electricity. Physically, they
are dull and brittle.

4) Discuss the general properties of inert gases.

Inert gases are odorless, non-flammable, unreactive, colorless, and can conduct electricity. On top of that, these gases
are insoluble in water and have low melting + boiling points.

5) Indicate which elements are Metalloids. Discuss the common properties that they have.

Boron, Silicon, Germanium, Arsenic, Antimony, Tellurium, and Polonium are all metalloids. They are solids that have
a metallic luster, giving them the look of a normal metal. They can conduct electricity and heat but not at the level or
as well as metals. Lastly, metalloids are brittle which is another significant difference they have between metals.

6) As you look at a group or family of elements on the periodic table, what can you predict about the elements?

Elements in the same family follow the pattern of having the same number of valency electrons. This resultantly gives
them similar chemical properties. For example, Li and Na are both highly reactive.

7) On a separate sheet of paper, summarize a current (within the last six months) newspaper or magazine article about
an element. Be sure to staple a copy of the article with your summary.

Sodium is an element that is commonly in discussion around human diet and salts. However,
something that is recently being considered is the usage of sodium in the field of electric vehicles. As
of right now, most electric vehicles use lithium-ion batteries, which have proven to be effective.
Unfortunately, because of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the prices of nickel (a key metal used in the
production of these batteries) and the overwhelming demand for electric vehicle batteries has
complicated the production process. Resultantly, scientists in India have been experimenting with a
sodium-ion battery that would be significantly cheaper and quicker to produce than the traditional
lithium-ion batteries. These batteries can function similarly to each other because as discussed in
question 6, elements in the same family (like sodium and lithium) have similar properties. Although
the sodium-ion batteries are not as energy dense and lightweight as lithium, they can still be useful as a
low-to-mid tier battery in electric vehicle productions. Since they store, 30% less Wh/kg than lithium-
ion batteries, scientists suspect that sodium-ion batteries could play a role in vehicles that have a lower
weight-to-power ration, such as electric motorcycles or scooters. Ultimately, with labs such as Reliance
New Energy Solar pouring in hundreds of millions of dollars into this technology, it can be expected
that in the near future, many smaller scale electric vehicles will leverage the high electrochemical
potential, high energy-density, and highly conductive properties of sodium to make batteries.
