8Hadith Level 1 - Nurul Iman (The Light of Faith)

Ustazah Izyan Liana

Lesson 1

Introduction
 Intentions, Intentions, Intentions! Make lots of lofty and noble intentions! Allah
rewards us as we intended.
 The scholars would not step out of their house, or start a good deed, without listing
down 70 intentions.( It is a good practice to put in place before starting anything)
 Nawaitu maa nawaa salafus-soleh, I intend what(ever) the righteous predecessors
intended
‫َنَو ْيُت َم ا َنَو ى َس اَل ُف الَّصاِلح‬ 
 Intentions we can make before we start something
Some intentions are:
 To gain the mercy and kindess of Allah, as Allah shows mercy on the one who
memorises from the Prophet (PBUH) words and then conveys it to others
 To fulfill our testimony of faith “Ash-hadhu anna MuhammadarRasuulullah”
 To keep the company of the Prophet (PBUH)
 To listen to the best of speech from amongst human beings
 To be counted as a student of the Prophet (PBUH)

Hadith 1- Tuma’ninah in Salahat

About the Companion: Anas bin Malik al-Ansari

Who is Sayidina Anas?
 Anas bin Malik al-Ansari / Abu Hamzah (kunyah)
 Served the Prophet(pbuh) since he was 10 years old. His mother didn’t have
anything to give Rasulullah(pbuh) when she came to Madinah, except her son.
 Rasulullah made this du’a for S Anas bin Malik

‫الّٰل هم اْك ِثْر َم اُلُه َو َو َلَد ُه َو َأِط ْل ُع ْم ُر ُه َو َباِرْك َلُه َو اْد ِخ ْلُه اْلَج َّنة‬
“O Allah please grant him abundance of wealth and offspring, and lengthen his life,
and bless him, and let him enter Jannah.”
 He is one of the Sahaabahs and he has narrated the most number of hadith /2286
(most of them concerning the sifat/ beauty of prophet(pbuh)as he grew up in the
household of the Prophet)

Hadith Explanation
 Complete your bows and prostrations - rukun fi’li in salat by fulfilling tuma’ninah (to
pause between movements in salah to the length of “Subhan Allah” - in order to gain
khusyu(peace and happiness) in salah/ not to rush.)
 Mu’jizat Rasullullah ‫ ﷺ‬- he was able to see what is behind him as how he sees
what is in front of him.

Learning Points
 We are commanded to carry out our prayers properly with khusyu and to bow and
prostrate correctly with tuma’ninah
 Feeling that we are watched by the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬helps us have hayaa’ towards him
and if we have hayaa’ towards the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬, then we have hayaa’ towards
Allah
o (haayaa’ - feeling of shyness/modesty and this is connected to our iman.
Connected to rukun ihsan - to worship Allah as though you can see Him. How
would you feel if you can see Him? Would you do as you like? Rasullullah
‫ ﷺ‬Is always updated of the actions of his ummah, so we are in a sense
watched by Rasullulah ‫? ﷺ‬
o But we can’t see Allah, so we must be aware that Allah can see us. So we
must feel humility and not do anything bad/sinful)

Hadith 2 - The People of Yemen

Companion: Abu Hurayrah
 Abdul Rahman bin Sokhr Ad-Dausi, Kunniyah was given by Rasulullah ‫ ﷺ‬Abu
Hurayrah
 One of the sahaabah who narrated the most hadith /5374
 Rasulullah ‫ ﷺ‬saw a cat/ kitten in the sleeve (baggy sleeve) of S Abu Hurayrah, so
he ‫ ﷺ‬called him Abu Hurayrah
 Once, Rasulullah ‫ ﷺ‬saw a group of companions (including S Abu Hurayrah)
gathering to make du’as and saying aamiin for one another’s du’as. The 1st 2
companions made their du’as and everyone including Rasulullah ‫ ﷺ‬said aamiin. -
If Rasulullah ‫ ﷺ‬says aamiin, it will be granted.
 S Abu Hurayrah said, O Allah, indeed I ask from you what 2 of my friends here have
asked, and I ask from You knowledge that is beneficial. Rasulullah ‫ ﷺ‬said aamiin.
Then the 2 friends said we also want that! Rasulullah ‫ ﷺ‬said your friend has
done so before you. (sabaqa)

Lesson 2

Hadith Explanation
 Who are the people of Yemen? A source said it’s the people who stopped by S Hajar
& nabi Ismail were from Yemen and they were asked to stay in Makkah by nabi
Ibraheem. The lineage of the people of Makkah today trace back to Yemen.
 Another opinion is there a group of people who came to Mekkah and were from
Yemen
 Compliment on the people of Yemen - their hearts are soft and easily accepts the
truth
 ‫ أرُّق َأْفِئَد ًة‬: Soft-hearted and easily accepts the truth - They accepted Islam without
warfare
 ‫َو َأْلَيُن ُقُلوًبا‬: the most tender of souls
 Hubabah Nur (Umm Salim), wife of Habib ‘Umar. After salat tarawih with habib
‘Umar, some of the Banat Zahra would pray with hababah Nur. She’s recite 1 page of
the Quran every raka’at. Can feel that she was reading really from her heart, and she
would cry easily while reading.
 ‫اِإْل يَم اُن َيَم اٍن‬: Faith is Yemeni: If we want to look at people who have faith, look at
the people of Yemen
o Look at how they are living by the words of Allah ‫ ﷻ‬and the words of
Rasulullah ‫ ﷺ‬, how they live by the sunnah of Rasulullah ‫ﷺ‬
o When we want to learn, learn adab it is so much more than knowledge.
o When we want to make a cake/ bread, make our adab like how much flour
we put in, and make our knowledge like how much salt we put in.
 ‫َو اْلِح ْك َم ُة َيَم اِنَيٌة‬: Beneficial knowledge is shown through speech and action
o We see how much they benefit from their knowledge by how they implement
the knowledge.
o When cooking and doing any housework, send prayers on the prophet!. Fill
our time and work with salawat, du’as, and dzikr.

Learning Points
 We are allowed to compliment the people of a country for their good traits
 Abdullah bin Amr narrated this story. Rasulullah ‫ ﷺ‬went out one day and saw a
group of companions (including Abdullah bin Amr), and they made space for
Rasulullah ‫ ﷺ‬. He sat down with them and said, where is my companion? They
are from me and I am from them, and I enter Jannah and they enter jannah with me.
Ya rasulallah, tell us, who are these people? Rasulullah ‫ ﷺ‬said, they are the
people of Yemen. Allah has placed them on the face on the Earth. They do not
approach/ stay away from the doors of asking their kings and governors (they refrain
from asking), when one of them passes away and his request is still kept in his chest
because he didn't ask for it. It will be fulfilled in jannah. (They don’t ask from people,
but they want their hajat to be fulfilled by Allah swt in the hereafter)
 It’s also said, “When the time of fitnah has come, hurry to Yemen!” Why? Because
Rasulullah ‫ ﷺ‬said “the people of Yemen are full of love (ruhama) and its land is
full of blessings (barakah), and whatever ibadah that is done in Yemen, Allah swt
multiplies the rewards.”
 Habib ‘Umar and our teachers never fail to remind “How many people are far from
Tareem, but are close to Tareem! (spiritually, because of their ibadah and amal,
because they spend time in mawlids, listen to the lessons of the people of Tareem,
etc.) How many people are in Tareem, but they are far... :( (even though they are in
Tareem, they don’t act on the knowledge that they’ve learned from the scholars
there)
o how do we be from amongst the people of Tareem? Implement what we
learn from the people of Tareem.
o Keep saying Ya Tareem wa ahlahaa (at least a 100 times?) - insyaAllah Allah
swt will bring us to Tareem
o Rasulullah ‫ ﷺ‬didn’t mention hurry to Makkah, nor al-Madinah, but to
Yemen!

Hadith 3 - Just between children

 Sayidina Nu’man and his father went to Rasullullah ‫ ﷺ‬and his father said that
he presented a servant to one of his child. The prophet ‫ ﷺ‬asked if his father had
given the same gift to his other children. His father said no. And Rasullulah ‫ﷺ‬
said to be just with you children and the father took back his gift.

Companion:
 Nu’man bin Basyir bin Sa’ad bin Tsa’labah bin al-Ansari
 The first child to be born from the Ansar after Hijrah

Hadith Explanation
 ‫ َنَح ْلُت‬: I gifted
 ‫ اْع ِد ُلوا‬: To be fair / just
 ‫ أْو اَل ِد ُك ْم‬: Comprises of both male and female

Learning Points
 A parent is allowed to take back a present he had given to his child (but do it
properly, with adab to the children haha, and make sure our children understands
why)
 Proof that the sahaabah would seek advice from the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬in the most
trivial of matters. Sahabis want to do everything properly and right by the Prophet
and would seek advice from the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬if they have any doubt, that was
what the father of Sayidina Nu’man did.
 It is best for parents to refrain from doing anything that might invoke jealousy
between siblings. Parents must be careful how they treat their children so that they
do not grow up hating their siblings and parents.

Lesson 3

Hadith 4 - The Most Difficult Prayer

Hadith Explanation

 ‫َأْثَقَل‬: The most difficult

 ‫ الُم ًَناِفِقْيَن‬: The plural of ‫ منافق‬- Outward muslims, inwardly concealing disbelief
 ‫ َح ْبًو ا‬: Crawling
 We’re unable to see the sirr (secrets) and blessings within these 2 prayers. Our eyes
have a hijab on them
 If we’re able to see the secrets behind these prayers, we’d attend these prayers even
with extreme difficulty
 This was the hukum allowed that time
 Hypocrites - Those people who outwardly who show they are muslims but hide their
disbelief inside. Amongst the people they say they believe Allah and his prophets but
back at home they don't
 What makes Isha and Fajr prayers difficult?:
 Because the time of isya is night time, when we tend to be sleeping/ sleepy after a
whole day of activities; our sleepiness might conquer us
 And the time of fajr feels nice to sleep in
 These prayers are difficult for us also, not just the hypocrites
 These hypocrites, when they pray, they are not praying for Allah swt’s pleasure. They
are for others to see and praise them.
 If anyone leaves these prayers, be cautious of our state, because these are signs of
hypocrites
 At the timings of zuhr, asar & maghrib, we are in the company of people; so they’d
pray to let others see.
 Intentional or non intentional hypocrisy, 4 signs of munafik
1. Doesn’t carry out his amanah (responsibility) properly
2. When he speaks he lies
3. When he makes a promise, he breaks it
4. When he disputes, he is abusive
 If we have any of these signs, try to rid ourselves of these signs
 May Allah swt cleanse our hearts and make us believers in the true sense, and
protect us from hypocrites, intentionally or unintentionally

Learning Points
 Encouraged to invite others to attend prayers in generally, especially isya & fajr
 All five prayers should invite prayers but ESPECIALLY isya and fajr
 Invite family members - burden will be lifted from you to carry out their obligations,
don’t leave your family members in heedlessness
 If we love someone, and want to be together in Jannah, don't leave family members
and loved ones. Remind to be good and do salat (wake them up)
 The reminder of destroying of wealth is during the beginning of Islam. Thereafter,
the hukum was dismissed. - don’t do it, it’s not allowed anymore!
 After giving our salaams at the end of the prayer, don’t be hasty to leave the prayer
mat. It’s also a sign of hypocrisy.
 A mu’min will feel at peace after salah, hypocrite would want to quickly go home and
get other things done
 Malaikah are making istighfar for us after Salam before us changing our positions, try
stay in tawarruk position as long as you can. Recite zikir, du’as
 All prayers during prophet’s time were done in Jemaah with the prophet, if you’re
still doing prayers at home then it is not a sign of hypocrisy
 Nights are made longer - one Hikmah is for people to do tahajjud

Hadith 5 - The 7 deadly sins

Hadith Explanation
 To stay away from these 7 deadly sins mentioned out of the many. But does not
mean there are only 7
 If prophet mentioned it then it is considered a BIG sin
1. SHIRKU BILLAH
 Associating partners - 2 types of syirik
 Zahir: associate Allah with partners visibly and obviously
 Khafi: hidden syirik. Eg. going to the doctor and getting medicine, “I always get cured
when I eat this doc’s medicine”. We should remember that it is not medicine, but it
is Allah that cures! Be careful of our words
 Medicine made by humans cures certain parts of us but destroys and ruins others,
Allah’s shifa’ is the best and it is full shifa’
 Certain capsules(medicines) are made from pig, we need to be careful of what we
put in our body. If we eat haram intentionally or not, we might do haram (we will,
unintentionally or intentionally, commit ma’siyat)
 We can go to the doctors by ikhtiyar, they are the teachers and scholars of the
human body
 The thing that we can’t do is to believe that it’s the doctors or their medicine that
cure us. They are just asbab (reasons, means) through which Allah swt cures us
2. SIHIR
 Sihir (black magic, shaman, soothsayers, witchcraft), to destroy families and other
people’s lives with it
 Until now there are people who go to these shaman, because they are jealous of
others… may Allah swt protect us and our families from these >.<
 Cure: remember to create barriers through our wirid- our Quran recitation and dzikr.
Don’t wait for something to happen to us before we recite the Quran
 Some of those who practise black magic recite the Quran, or start with the Basmalah
then mumble something that isn’t understandable - they hide behind the ayat of
Allah
 If the person gives off a different vibe, then do not continue such a session, look out
for red flags
 In Singapore, “kisah ruqyah SG”? They call out the red flags of those who claim to do
ruqyah but are actually not in accordance to the shari’ah
 It’s wrong to assume that we are being affected by sihr when we don’t have
evidence. Because it is wrong to have su-uz-zhonn (bad opinions) of others
(especially Muslims)
 Check with a person who is knowledgeable if we think we are afflicted
 Recite ayatul Kursiy, 3 quls to protect us, bring out forgiveness from deep in our
hearts. People of knowledge doing the ruqyah would not name the person who does
sihir to avoid any fitnah, this is a green flag
 Read with yaqeen that Allah swt will help and protect us from harm; it will be as we
believe insyaAllah
3. Taking a life rendered inviolable by God unjustly
 Even when they were fighting in a war, (because the Muslims were oppressed, Allah
swt allowed them to go for war and take lives. At this time now, there is no more
killing for the sake of Allah swt.
 Once an enemy was “put down?” by S Ali. At that moment, the enemy spat the face
of S Ali. He walked away immediately. S Ali was asked why he walked away when he
was in a prime position to kill the enemy. S Ali said it’s because at that moment of
being spat, he might kill not only truly for the sake of Allah swt, but partly for
himself.
 Taking care of niyyahs even when killing. Is he doing it for Allah?
4. Riba’ (Usury)
 Riba: interest
o We borrow money from a bank, and they say we are to pay them back with
interest. This interest is haram.
o If we loan others money, we can’t put an interest.
o If we loan, it’s an act of charity, to ease the affairs of fellow Muslims or
children of Nabi Adam as, not as a chance to make extra money
o If we eat from that money, then it is haraam
o Intentionally or unintentionally eating from the haraam makes your body
commit ma’siyyah
 Muslims can invest but invest in halal businesses abiding in Allah’s shariah e.g.
technology, medicine as your money is working for you
 The interest that we gain from the bank is also haram
5. Consuming wealth of an Orphan
 We cannot consume the wealth nor use the money for own expenses, but can use
for the foster parents’ & the orphan’s own expenses for them
6. Flee on a day of military engagement
 If the companions didn’t follow in war, they’re considered munaafiquun- they were
scared to be killed or injured
 It was a deadly sin then
 The companions would pray to Allah swt to have their lives taken during war, to die
as a shaheed (martyr)
 Allah swt puts tranquility in the hearts of the Muslims
7. To falsely accuse chaste innocent women of impropriety
 Need to Certain pointers of proof to accuse someone of zina, if not it would be
considered fitna
 Ghaafilaat usually means - busying ourselves with the wrong things, not with what
Allah swt has commanded; negligence, not mindful, heedless
 Ghaafilaat in terms of false accusation of a woman - points to her innocence
o The woman is unaware of matters like cheating and infidelity ie. the woman
is so pure
 The major sin is to accuse her of indecency like what happened to S Aishah (the ifk)
 The deadly sin mentioned here is the accusation of infidelity, not zina
Conclusion
 They are called deadly sins because it is a reason for them to be condemned to the
Hellfire

Learning Points

 We are commanded to completely stay away from these deadly sins

 The aforementioned deadly sins are haram
 To take a life for reasons other that what is justified by Allah is a big sin
Hadith 6- The most beloved acts

Companion:

 Abdullah bin Mas’ud / kunniyah: Abu Abdul Rahman

 The first person to recite the Quran out loud in Makkah (surah Ar-Rahman). A huge
deal! At first Rasulullah saw was spreading da’wah, he (saw) was doing it in private
circles. It was also a huge deal when the Muslims first prayed in the open
 The khadim of Rasulullah saw
 He is the sahib of the siwak of Rasulullah saw, and he carried Rasulullah’s saw
secrets, walking with him, carrying his sandals
 One of the greatest scholars from amongst the sahaabah
 Narrated 848 Hadiths
 Rasulullah saw praised him, saying he was a great teacher, mu’allim

Hadith Explanation
 ‫الصالة لوقتها‬: To pray within the stipulated time/ to pray in the early part of the prayer
time.
o Pray early timings of the prayer timing: will find the redha of Allah
o Pray in the middle timing: will find the mercy of Allah (learned in a diff class)
o Pray in the late timing within the prayer timing: will find the forgiveness ‫عفو‬
of Allah swt
 To busy ourselves right after the adzan with things that are directly related to solah,
eg take wudhu
 Fadhiilah of praying early in the time or the end of solah
o As in we are comparing the akhirah (start of prayer time) and Dunya (end of
prayer time)
o There will be more barakah in our time insyaAllah

 ‫البر الوالدين‬: To obey your parents (bare minimum but there is a limit)
o Obey parents in things that are wajib. Eg. Parents responsible to teach our
obligations as a Muslim (solah, covering aurah etc)
o If they are asking us to do ma’siyah, then that is NOT birrul walidayn
o We are still the child to our parents so we still need to keep our adab with
them, obliged to love and care for them
o Then we have to keep doing the obligations, but with adab towards our
parents
o Do not have any hatred for our parents, pray for them if we are not able to
treat parents well or speak kind words to them
o E.g. if our parents’ jobs make them engage in haram, abusive, etc., it’s not on
us to judge them, but we are to treat them with humility, du’a for them
 There is no such thing as obeying the creations while doing ma’siyah to the Creator
o The Creator is higher than the creation
o Allah’s love for His servants is even greater than a mother’s love for her child
o Rasulullah saw’s love for his ummah is greater than a love of a mother for her
child
o He cried for us every night and supplicated for us every day even when he
hasn’t met us yet (he is still doing so in his grave)

 ‫جهاد في سبيل هللا‬: To willingly sacrifice in order to uphold the religion of Allah
 To give your all and sacrifice in the name of Allah
 Types of Jihaad
o Jihadul Maal - with your wealth
o JIhaadul Lisan - with your words
o JIhaadul saif - with your sword
o JIhaadul - with knowledge - fighting ignorance

Learning Points
 Virtues of following these acts in order (tartib) as mentioned by the Prophet saw
o Fard salah > Birrul Walidayn > Jihaad
o Solah comes first before birrul walidayn
o E.g. we are praying our fardh salat but our parents call us, then we can’t
respond to them (but if it’s a sunnah prayer, then we stop the prayer and
respond to them)
o Birrul walidayn comes before Jihaad
o Compare birrul-walidayn & jihad: if we wish to seek knowledge (even just to
travel for a class) but our parents are unwell, then to take care of our parents
is afdhal.

Hadith 7 - the most beloved people

Sahabi: S ‘Amr bin al-‘As
 Kunniyah: Abu Abdullah
 Passed away the night of Eidul Fitr 43H at 70 years old
 One of the most blessed nights when we’re recommended to stay up the whole
night for worship

Hadith explanation
 The father of S ‘Aishah is S Abu Bakr
 This was Rasulullah’s ‫ ﷺ‬expression of what he felt at that point of time and it
does not mean that the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬Loved his other wives and the sahabah any
less
 When Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬Expresses his love for someone, it is because of that person’s
love to Rasulullah ‫ ﷺ‬and Allah
 We should know ourselves what is our Qadr of love for Allah and Rasulullah, then if it
is little, increase in it by seeking knowledge of the Deen, Sirah, hadith
o The more we learn about Rasulullah ‫ﷺ‬, the more we may be given love
for him ‫ﷺ‬
o The hadith are the exact words of Rasulullah 1400 years ago. Alhamdulillah
for his companions and the ones who followed for preserving all these words
o Rasulullah ‫ ﷺ‬is our first teacher. The sanad of all our knowledge goes
back to him ‫ﷺ‬
 When we love Rasulullah ‫ ﷺ‬more, our love for Allah swt will also increase
3:31
Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “If you ˹sincerely˺ love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and
forgive your sins. For Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

 One of the specialties from S Aishah is that she received salam from S Jibril (S
Khadijah & S Fatimah also received salam from S Jibril)
 Also called As-siddiqah bint as-siddiq
 If the Iman of S Abu Bakr was to be put on a scale, and the the Iman of all the
creations from the beginning of time, the Iman of S Abu Bakr is heavier.
o It’s from his love for Allah ‫ ﷻ‬and Rasulullah ‫ﷺ‬
o He sacrificed all that he had for the sake of Allah ‫ﷻ‬
o He had some wealth and he gave all his wealth for the sake of Allah swt.
Rasulullah ‫ ﷺ‬said what did you leave for your family? S Abu Bakr said,
Allah ‫ ﷻ‬and Rasulullah ‫ﷺ‬
o Because he know Allah ‫ ﷻ‬and Rasulullah ‫ ﷺ‬would not leave them
without help
o How do we compare? Can we give up all our wealth and belongings for the
sake of Allah ‫ ﷻ‬right at this moment?
 When we listen to our Teachers, the way they call to Allah ‫ ﷻ‬is through love and
rahmah. May Allah ‫ ﷻ‬make us amongst those who taste the sweetness of love
for Allah ‫ ﷻ‬and Rasulullah ‫ﷺ‬, and may He ‫ ﷻ‬increase our love for Him
and Rasulullah ‫ ﷺ‬till we are deserving to witness Dzat of Allah in the Hereafter
 When we give something for the sake of Allah ‫ﷻ‬, He gives us back multifold

Learning Points
 We are permitted to express our love for people provided that it is love for the sake
of Allah ‫ ﷻ‬and they are ahlul-kheir and deen
 If we’re expressing our love for the sake of dunya (eg for actors, artistes, etc), may
Allah ‫ ﷻ‬protect us from this…
 When we look at a picture of a righteous person, we will feel the barakah
 When we are in different points in our lives, we’re closer to different people. At that
moment when he ‫ ﷺ‬was expressing his love for these 2 companions, it was how
he was feeling in that moment.

Hadith 8

While we were praying with Rasulullah ‫ﷺ‬, we heard a sound of men as if they were
fighting (loud sounds). So when Rasulullah ‫ ﷺ‬finished praying, he asked what is with
you? The companions said, we were hurrying for prayer. Rasulullah ‫ ﷺ‬said (the hadith)

Sahabi: Abu Qatadah

 Qatadah bin An-Nu’man
 Once in warfare, while protecting RAsulullah ‫ﷺ‬, one of his eye fell out of its
socket and onto his hand. Rasulullah ‫ ﷺ‬made du’a and put his saliva onto the
Eye and put it back into its socket
o Till the end of his life, he said the eye that Rasulullah ‫ ﷺ‬made Dua for,
was always clear, clearer than the other eye.
