- Maya Angelou born on April 4, - Her parents split up when she was
1928, in St.Louis, Missouri. very young, and she and her older
brother, Bailey, were sent to live
- Died at the age of 86 on May 28, with their father's mother, Anne

- Angelou had a difficult - She was the first African American

Significant event in their childhood that impact
their life

- When she was 7 years old on a visit to her mother, Angelou was
raped by her mother's boyfriend. As vengeance for the sexual
assault, Angelou's uncles killed the boyfriend. So traumatized
by the experience, Angelou stopped talking. She returned to
Arkansas and spent years as a virtual mute. Also as an African
American, Angelou experienced firsthand racial prejudices and
discrimination in Arkansas.

She attended George Washington She graduated from Mission


High School and took dance and High School in the summer of
drama courses at the 1944 and soon after gave birth
California Labor School. to her only child, Clyde
Bailey.

Her life after studying
● 1950- she performed professionally in the US, Europe,
and northern Africa, and sold albums of her
recordings.
● 1959- Maya joined the Harlem Writers Guild.
● 1969- Angelou published I Know Why the Caged Bird
Sings, an autobiography of her early life.
● 1971- Wrote numerous poetry volumes.
● Angelou eventually published six more
autobiographies, culminating in 2013’s Mom & Me &
Mom.
● In 2012, she was a member of the inaugural class
inducted into the Wake Forest University Writers Hall
of Fame.
