Medieval art was produced in many media,

and works survive in large numbers in
sculpture, illuminated manuscripts, stained
glass, metalwork and mosaics, all of which
have had a higher survival rate than other
media such as fresco wall-paintings, work in
precious metals or textiles, including tapestry.

Philosophy of the medieval period was

closely connected to Christian thought,
particularly theology. Much of the art in
Europe during the Middle Ages was
religious art with Catholic subjects and
themes.

RENAISSANCE

ART
•The Renaissance saw a shift away from the stylized and
symbolic art of the Middle Ages to a more naturalistic and
humanistic approach. Painters and sculptors aimed to capture the
human form in a realistic and lifelike manner, and many works
from this period are characterized by a heightened sense of
drama and emotional expression.
-rooted in humanism, which emphasized the value and worth
of the individual. Renaissance thinkers sought to rediscover
the wisdom and knowledge of the ancient world and to use
that knowledge to improve the lives of people in the present.
The pursuit of knowledge and understanding is reflected in
the art of the period, which often celebrated the beauty and
potential of the human form.
