Activity 1.

2.a) Lights that can be attached to a bike are being advertised

(Skully Lights). They are to make the bikes visible on the road
but do not replace head and tail lights.

2.b) Yes. These are specialist terms (jargon) that the ordinary
person may not know.

2.c) Fun and functional.

2.d) Someone who has heard of the lights, or knows about

them and wants one.

4.a) Learners should see that the Skully Lights are being
advertised.

4.b) The word “WANTED” and the nine little lights.

4.c) The first advertisement has no attention-grabbing words or

fonts, and the picture of the same nine little lights is much
smaller. Here they are big and not in block where they all look
the same, they show different angles and get progressively
closer to the viewer. They look much more interesting.

4.d) It stands out from the white background; the word suggests
things that cyclists can buy to add to the enjoyment of their
cycling.

4.e) Neil Gardiner

4.f) It suggests the light as a gift for someone for someone who
is a cyclist; the subheading is “GIFTS” and below “WANTED” it
says “Finally, a gift guide just for cyclists….”

4.g) It gives the impression of speaking to the reader, whereas

the first is more informative and formal.

4.h) The word “Finally” implies that everyone has been waiting
for the gift guide suggestion. The reader is made to feel left out
if he/she does not buy one. The small paragraph compares
other cycle lights to these and says the others are boring,
implying that these are exciting. It gives a brief, informative
description and the purpose of the lights, but calls the cyclist “a
serious badass”, flattering the rider. Those who have the lights
want to be thought of in the same way, and this will help
persuade them to buy the lights.

4.i) Things are usually cheaper if one buys them on the

internet. The cycling shops have added R5 as part of their profit
margin.

4.j) It acknowledges where the product is advertised and gives

the reader information on how to do further research on the
lights.

4.k) The first one.
