Activity No. 2
Charging by Contact
Objective:
To understand the concept of charging by contact through hands-on experiments and observations.
Materials:
Balloon Wool cloth
Plastic ruler Aluminum foil
Paper pieces Plastic drinking straw
Tissue paper Pen/pencil
Procedure:
1. Charge Transfer with Balloon and Wool Cloth:
Rub the balloon against the wool cloth for about 20-30 seconds.
Bring the charged balloon close to small pieces of paper or scraps of tissue paper. Observe what
happens.
Record your observations.
2. Transfer of Charge with Plastic Ruler:
Rub the plastic ruler against your hair or a piece of wool cloth for about 20-30 seconds.
Bring the charged ruler close to small pieces of paper or scraps of tissue paper. Observe what
happens.
Record your observations.
3. Charge Transfer with Aluminum Foil:
Tear a small piece of aluminum foil.
Rub it against your hair or a piece of wool cloth for about 20-30 seconds.
Bring the charged foil close to small pieces of paper or scraps of tissue paper. Observe what happens.
Record your observations.
4. Using a Plastic Drinking Straw:
Cut a small piece of tissue paper.
Rub the plastic drinking straw against your hair or a piece of wool cloth for about 20-30 seconds.
Bring the charged straw close to the tissue paper. Observe what happens.
Record your observations.
Guide questions:
1. What similarities and differences did you observe in the behaviors of the charged objects (balloon, ruler,
foil, straw)?
