GIVE AND TAKE

Objectives:

 Demonstrate how charge objects with static electricity.

 Demonstrate attraction and repulsion between charges.

Materials:

A plastic comb two small inflated round balloons several tiny pieces of paper

A piece of thread two glass rods or plastic rods a piece of nylon or silk cloth

A piece of wool or fur two hard rubber rods a can of cooking oil

PROCEDURE:

A. Process of Charging
1. Rub a plastic comb several times on your hair.
2. Touch a small inflated balloon with the comb. Observe what happen.
3. Rub the comb again on your hair.
4. Place it near tiny pieces of paper without touching them. Observe what happens.
5. Record all your observations in table 1.

TABLE 1

OBSERVATION
COMB TO HAIR After I rubbed the comb to my hair, it seems that the
my hair become attracted to comb.

COMB TO BALLOON

COMB TO PAPER After rubbing comb for a several seconds in my hair

and place it near to tiny several pieces of paper, paper
starts to attach to the comb like a magnet.

B. ATTRACTION AND REPULSION

1. Tie one of a piece of thread to a horizontal fixed support. Make a knot at the other end of the
thread, large enough so that the glass rod can be inserted through it without falling and can be
free to rotate.
2. Rub briskly two glass rod for five minutes on a piece of nylon or silk. Insert one of these rods
through the knot on the thread.
3. Bring the other rod near the suspended rod (a). observe what happens.
4. Remove the glass rod from the thread.
5. Repeat Step 1 to 4 using rubber rods and wool or fur (b).
6. Repeat Step 1, Rub a glass rod on silk and a rubber rod on wool for five minutes. Insert the glass
rod through the knot in the thread.
7. Bring the rubber rod near the suspended glass rod (c). Observe what happens.
8. Record all your observations in table 2.

C. POLARIZATION

1. Charge on glass rod by rubbing it briskly for five minutes on a piece of nylon or silk cloth.
2. Turn on the faucet in such a way that the water flows in a small but continuous stream.
3. Bring the rod near the water stream. Observe what happens.
4. Punch two small holes opposite each other on a can of cooking oil.
5. Charge a glass rod by rubbing briskly for five minutes on a piece of nylon or silk cloth.
6. Tip the can of cooking oil in such a way that the oil will make a small but continuous stream.
7. Bring the rod near the oil stream. Observe what happens.
8. Record all your observations below.

CONCLUSION

POST-LABORATORY QUESTIONS

1. What are the different process of charging? How are these processes demonstrated in the activity?
- The different process of charging is by friction, contact, and induction. The process of charging by
friction shows when we are rubbing the material into each other. The process of charging by contact
when is when the rubbed comb contact to a neutral pices of paper and the paper attracts to the comb.
And for the process of charging by induction is when the rubbed rods place to the near water stream
and the water attracted to the rod and bend.

2. How would you explain the results you obtained in part B based on triboelectric series?

- Well, the two glass rods obtained electrons from rubbing it to nylon and when the other rod get
suspended, and place the other rod to the near suspended rod, the two repel because they have both are
negatively charged. Same situation to the rubber rods.

3. Did you get similar results for water and oil in part C of this activity? What can be a possible
reason for these results?
