Overview – the Bigger Picture

• Goal is to simulate coverage before network deployment.

• First simulation is always a propagation evaluation.

• Second simulation is a network simulation: uses propagation results in combination with Air Interface,
e.g. OFDM, with many parameters.

• Network simulation provides the best cell assignment, as well as interference levels.

• Two criteria for communication are

• minimum Signal-to-Noise-and-Interference Ratio (SNIR) at the receiver

• minimum required power at the receiver.

• Depending on data rates and modulation schemes, in locations where criteria are met, you can
communicate.

• If you can communicate, it will be at the fixed data rate that belongs to the particular transmission mode.

Overview – ProMan Simulation

• Many parameters for Air Interface (OFDM in this case), are in pre-defined file.

• We will define locations, powers, carriers of a few base stations.

• Dominant Path Model will be used for simulation.

• Propagation simulation is done first.

• Network simulation is done second.

Exercise 7A - Step 2: Save the project

a) File > Save Project
Select the correct directory and give the project a name, e.g. office.net

b) Two files are written to disk:

• office.net and

• office.nip.

These belong together.

If you need to send a project to somebody else,

e.g. to customer support, you need to send two files:

• One is always the .net file;

• the other is .nip for indoor,

.nup for urban and .nrp for rural scenarios.

Altair WinProp Basic, v2020

Exercise 7A - Step 19: Received power for cell assignment

a) This particular Received Power under

of the reference channel.
b) This is only a few percent of the total
power.

27

Altair WinProp Basic, v2020

Exercise 7A - Step 19: Received power for cell assignment

c) As explained, this plot shows a lower power than the pure propagation result.

28
© Altair Engineering, Inc. Proprietary and Confidential. All rights reserved.
Altair WinProp Basic, v2020

Exercise 7A - Step 20: Interference

a) Note: interference in lower-left quadrant is
high because Site 1 and Site 2 are on the
same carrier. They are in each other’s
way.

b) Signal-to-Noise-and-Interference Ratio
(SNIR) is low in the lower-left quadrant.

29
© Altair Engineering, Inc. Proprietary and Confidential. All rights reserved.
Altair WinProp Basic, v2020

Exercise 7A - Step 20: Interference

c) The interference occurs because both sites emit an individual signal on the same frequency.
d) This can be changed by either assigning different carriers OR by keeping the same carriers but making them transmit the
same signal, so the signal from one is not longer the interference of the other.
e) Site: Edit button  Select a Site graphically  Edit as shown.
f) Watch out: if you click OK once, your results will be gone! Click Cancel if you only want to look.

Altair WinProp Basic, v2020

Exercise 7A - Step 21: Ability to use a certain transmission mode

a) Note: you need to exceed a certain power and
Signal-to-Noise-and-Interference Ratio (SNIR)
to be able to communicate.

b) In white areas, the chosen transmission mode

cannot be used (a slower one may still work).

c) In non-white areas, you can communicate at the

data-rate of the chosen transmission mode.

31

Altair WinProp Basic, v2020

Exercise 7A - Step 22: Statistical information

a) Information icon opens window with additional information.

b) In this case, the minimum SNIR in the plot is 17.2 dB,

because transmission mode 64 QAM, R=4_5 requires
at least 17.2 dB to communicate.

Altair WinProp Basic, v2020

Exercise 7A - Step 23: Other results

a) Take a few minutes to explore other results. In particular, note the combined plots of maximum data rate and maximum
throughput.

b) Throughput exceeds data rate by a factor 25 because there are 25 resource blocks. See next slide.

Altair WinProp Basic, v2020

Exercise 7A - Step 24: Resource blocks

a) LTE uses a 5 MB bandwidth in this project.
b) The FFT order is 512, but 211 subcarriers
are guard carriers and one is a DC subcarrier.
c)300 signal carriers remain.
d) One resource block has 12 subcarriers.
e)  25 resource blocks.
f) A transmission mode uses one resource block
(which can be changed).
g) Note: the .wst file had all of this already set up.
You don’t have to be a communication expert.

34

Altair WinProp Basic, v2020

Exercise 7A - Step 25: Conclusion

a) Summary:
• *.wst file has many settings predefined.
• A certain transmission mode requires a minimum received power and a minimum SNIR.
If those requirements are satisfied, you communicate at a given datarate;
otherwise you don’t communicate in that mode at all.

b) File > Save Project

c) File > Exit
