Backyard Bird Matching Cards

prepare:
Print cards on 8.5” x 11” card stock
Cut out each picture
Laminate for longevity

present:
Begin with 2-4 birds that are familiar to your child. Lay out the card and state its name clearly without extra vocabulary. Ex:
This is a quail. This is a robin.

explore:
As your child begins to explore these cards, reinforce the new language by making simple, clear statements. When they
grab a card simply state what they have. Ex: That is a warbler. Begin to make observation statements such as “the cardinal
is red”, “the magpie has a black head”, etc.

extend
These cards align with the Safari Ltd. Backyard Birds Toob (mini figures). You can begin to help your child match the bird
figure with the picture representation. You can model for your child how to match the figure to the picture and state what
you have done. “I have matched the oriole. Avoid statements like “oh no that’s a woodpecker not a blue jay”. Rather just
restate what they have selected in order to build vocabulary. Ex: “You have the woodpecker and the blue jay, here’s a
picture of the woodpecker, let’s put the woodpeckers together”. You can also print off the cards twice if you do not have
the figures and can practice picture to picture matching or use them for a memory game.
