When the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020, and lockdown restrictions were imposed, companies –
including arts companies – were forced to shut down. Artists and workers in the arts, especially the
performing arts, were laid off or suspended, losing their means of livelihood.

The Cultural Center of the Philippines came to the aid of a group of dancers, offering them the opportunity
to earn a living by teaching, and by conducting workshops and seminars online through the CCP Arts
Education Department in partnership with the Department of Education. Spearheaded by then CCP board
chair Margie Moran-Floirendo, the Professional Dance Support Program (PDSP) was established.

Working from home and then, when restrictions eased, from open areas of the CCP like the lobby and
ramp, the dancers received training in both Classical Ballet and Modern Dance. Later on, the program
included displaced dancers from Ballet Manila, Philippine Ballet Theatre and Steps Dance Studio as
they worked with different choreographers to create new works which were presented online in the CCP’s
“Dance On!” Series.

In December 2021, as restrictions in Manila further eased and live performances were allowed, the
culminating program, “A Christmas Celebration,” was presented live at the Main Theater with the
premiere of “Tuloy Ang Pasko.”

In 2022, the program expanded to include not just dancers but other workers in the performing arts, and
the program was re-named the Professional Artist Support Program (PASP). It successfully presented
a full season with four acclaimed productions in 2022 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. It
continues to present Filipino masterpieces with its 2023 Season.

Regional Dance Training Program

Through the CCP Arts Education Department, Regional Participants were given the opportunity to train
online as well under the PASP and ARDPs roster of professional dance artists under the PASP Regional
Dance Training Program. The chosen Regional Participants had access to classes in Classical Ballet,
Modern Dance, Hip Hop, Jazz, and Contemporary Dance taught by the country’s best dance professionals.

ARDP/PASP: Truly Dance Philippines
The Alice Reyes Dance Philippines and the Professional Artist Support Program have been dancing all over
the Philippines. Starting from its launch in Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte in July 2022, the company has
performed in nearly ten cities outside Metro Manila.

But even before they formally launched as a company, these dancers were reaching out. Through the
CCP’s Arts Education Department and the Department of Education, they held dance classes, lectures,
and workshops, all online throughout the pandemic months, turning bedrooms, living rooms, and even
hallways into studios. Students and teachers from Benguet to Samar to Cagayan participated in these
online sessions.

Under trying conditions of the pandemic – constant testing, distancing (no partnering), dancing with
masks in un-air conditioned spaces to allow proper ventilation, they danced and choreographed and
rehearsed, coming up with an online dance series – the CCP’s Dance ON! – in 2021. This included a new
Christmas piece, TULOY ANG PASKO, a defiant affirmation that the virus would not be the grinch that would
steal Christmas.

Dance ON! and TULOY ANG PASKO were viewed by thousands all over the country – and even abroad –
through the CCP channel and Facebook page. When COVID restrictions allowed live performances in 2021,
this intrepid group staged the CCP’s first live concert, TULOY ANG PASKO, which also featured excerpts from
Sleeping Beauty.

During their first season, the company staged new and treasured works in the Filipino dance repertoire,
ending with PUSO NG PASKO in December 2022, the first full-length, all-Filipino Christmas ballet.

They then took to the road. In May 2023, as they were in the middle of their second season of performances,
ARDP/PASP embarked on their first national tour. In partnership with local government units, the company
was able to touch major cities outside of Manila and the Visayas starting with Muñoz, Nueva Ecija; then
Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental; Dumaguete, Negros Oriental; Bacolod City, Negros Occidental; and
Ormoc, Leyte.

During the tours, the artists also held master classes and workshops in technique, movement, and
choreography, thereby discovering talents in the grassroots. Some of these talents have been training with
ARDP/PASP professionals through the PASP Regional Dance Training Program.

To cap its 2023 season, ARDP/PASP takes PUSO NG PASKO on tour. This iconic celebration of the Pinoy
Christmas starts with three performances at the Metropolitan Theater in Manila, then it moves on to
Angeles City, Pampanga; Tarlac City, Tarlac; and then to Muñoz City, Nueva Ecija.

Performances will also be held at Malacañang and at the Handog Saya celebration in Makati. It has been
an exciting albeit hectic year for ARDP/PASP, fulfilling its mission of not only presenting the highest quality
works by Filipino artists but also to bring the arts, particularly dance, all over the country. Indeed, for these
talented and dedicated artists, have dance, will travel.

THE METROPOLITAN THEATER

The Metropolitan Theater was first inaugurated on 10 December 1931 to serve as a National Theater.
This structure was designed by Architect Juan Arellano, and contains the artworks of National Artist
Fernando Amorsolo, Vidal Tampingco, and Professor Francesco Riccardo Monti. Currently, it is the
largest art deco heritage building still existing in the Philippines.

The MET was declared a National Historical Landmark on 21 October 1976, and a National Cultural
Treasure on 23 June 2010. After a series of inaugurations and closures because of war, bankruptcy,
and disrepair, the MET was bought by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts in 2015,
with the support of President Bengino S. Aquino III. After two years, restoration works commenced,
in partnership with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and the National Museum
of the Philippines. Works on the Theater were completed in 2021, and it was inaugurated for the
fifth occasion on 10 December 2021. It is dedicated once more to giving the Filipino people a chance
to watch performances highlighting original Filipino theatrical performances, dances, music, and
film. Through this, the People’s Theater aims to contribute not only in providing entertainment
and cultural education, but also in strengthening our national identity and in fostering creative
industries.

The MET, together with other performing venues in Manila, serves as home for some programs of the
Cultural Center of the Philippines, while the Tanghalang Pambansa undergoes renovation. Under
the sponsorship of the Professional Artists Support Program of the CCP, the Metropolitan Theater is
where the Alice Reyes Dance Philippines holds workshops, company classes and daily rehearsals
for its 2023 season. At the invitation of then Theater Director Aaron Veloso, ARDP has performed in
the MET since 2020, through the initiative and support of former and current NCCA Chairpersons
Arsenio Lizaso, Rene Escalante, and Ino Manalo. Together with the CCP, the ARDP and the MET have
successfully brought back to the stage treasured works from the Filipino dance repertoire, all of
which were eventually streamed online for audiences in the country, and beyond.
