Course Description:
Hospitality Management is the largest service industry in the world. This course is an overview of the basis
dimensions of professionalism, customer service, and sustainability to the major areas of hospitality
management, and segments of travel and tourism. The background and historical development of the
hospitality industry and its component areas are presented; employment opportunities and trends in each
area are discussed.
Course Scope:
This course is divided into 8 weeks and is designed to give the student a broad brush introduction to the various
segments in hospitality. The student will learn how all these service businesses work together to serve travelers as well
as locals. Students will research topics using journal articles and Web sites as an integral part of the weekly discussion.
Objectives
After successfully completing this course, you will be able to:
1. Identify the various segments of the hospitality industry.
2. Describe career opportunities available in Hospitality organizations.
3. Recognize skills and knowledge necessary to advance within the Hospitality industry
4. Apply the tools provided by professional organizations to explore current legislative issues and industry

Late Assignments
Students are expected to submit classroom assignments by the posted due date and to complete the
course according to the published class schedule. The due date for each assignment is listed under
each assignment.
Generally speaking, if arrangements are not made in advance, a late penalty of 10% will be assessed
for any assignment submitted 1-7 days past the due date. Assignments will not be accepted after the
7th day. No work will be accepted past the final day of class, unless prior arraignments have been
made with the instructor.
