Nuclear medicine is a medical specialty that uses safe techniques with a high cost-
benefit ratio. It allows obtaining functional information that helps detect alterations
before diseases present visible symptoms, significantly impacting early, more
effective treatments and more favorable prognoses.
Nuclear medicine scans provide more accurate and useful information for disease
diagnosis. It detects diseases in early stages before symptoms appear, and
precisely determines whether a lesion is benign or malignant, guiding appropriate
next steps.
What is a positron?
Positron. An electron with a positive charge. Interaction with an electron can result
in the annihilation of both, producing a pair of photons whose energy is equivalent
to that of the electron-positron pair. This property defines the positron as the
antiparticle associated with the electron.
Nuclear medicine has many advantages, among which the following stand out:
1- Diagnostic scans performed by nuclear medicine are non-invasive.
2- It provides functional and anatomical information.
3- It is a useful tool for determining cancer status.
4- It can provide answers for unclear or abnormal laboratory results.
