Measure Theory
Assignment

1. Prove that outer measure of an interval equals its length.

2. Define Lebesgue measurable set. Show that the class of Lebesgue measurable sets is a
σ–algebra and show that if 𝑚∗ (𝐸) = 0 then E is measurable.
3. Define Lebesgue measurable function. Show that if f is measurable, then
i. For all α, [𝑥: 𝑓(𝑥) ≥ 𝛼] is measurable.
ii. For all α, [𝑥: 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝛼] is measurable.

Give three examples of measurable functions

4. Define Canter set. Prove whether it is perfect or not. Prove that there exists an
uncountable set of Zero measure.
5. Define the following:
i. Simple Function
ii. Measurable simple function
iii. Non negative measurable function
And show that if 𝑓 is a non-negative measurable function then 𝑓 = 0 almost everywhere
iff ∫ 𝑓 𝑑𝑥 = 0.

1. Lebesgue outer measure with its relevant theorems and examples
2. Integration of Non-negative measurable functions with its relevant theorems and

3. General Integral of measurable functions with its relevant theorems and examples.
