ASEAN WEEK Every year, we celebrate ASEAN Week on august 7-13, pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No.1008,
dated May 21, 1997.

The highlight of the celebration is the commemoration of the 39th Foundation Anniversary of the Association of
Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which was established on August 8, 1967, in Bangkok with five original members, namely,
Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. In 1984, Brunei Darussalam joined the association, followed by
Vietnam in 1995, Laos and Myanmar in 1997, and Cambodia in 1999.

The ASEAN declaration states that the Association represents the collective will of the nations to bind themselves
together in friendship and cooperation and, through joint efforts and sacrifices, secure for their peoples and for posterity the
blessing of peace, freedom and prosperity.

The member countries have signed political accords, so that countries in the region live at peace with one another
and with the world at large in a just, democratic, and harmonious environment. They have an economic functional cooperation
to promote greater economic efficiency, productivity, and competitiveness among the member countries. This economic
cooperation covers the areas of trade, investment, and industry, services, transportation and communication, intellectual
property, small and medium enterprises, and tourism.

As we celebrate ASEAN week, let us join hands to initiate and implement programs and activities to generate
awareness and public support for the objectives of the association and to apply them in our country; to promote peace and
stability through abiding respect for justice and the rule of the law, and to observe the spirit of equality and partnership in
order to strengthen the foundation for prosperous and peaceful community.
