ABSTRACT
The purpose of this research study is to examine the influence of Social Networkonhigh
school students learning. Five Research questions andfive Researchhypotheses guidedthe
study. To achieve this, the descriptiveSurveyresearch designwas adopted. The study
focused on high school student hence, population consists of all the 24,661 full-time high
level students. The Simple random sampling technique was used to select a sample of
378 students. A Four point Likert Type Rating Scale Questionnaire type, titled: Social
Network and High school performance of Students Questionnaire (SMAAPOS) were
used to collect Data from the participants. The descriptive statistics of frequency counts
andPercentage were used to analyze the demographic data while inferential statistics Of
Chi-square(x2) was used in testing the research hypotheses. Research findings showed
that a great number of students are addicted to social network. To this end, the researcher
recommended that social network should be used for educational purposes as well; Social
Networking Sites should be expanded and new pages should be created to enhance high
school activities and avoid setbacks in the students’ high school performance; and
Students should be monitored by teachers and parents on how they use these sites This is
to create a balance between social network and high school activities of students to avoid
setbacks in the high school performance of the students.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION:
Introduction of theStudy:
These networking sites are used by most people to interact with old and new friends,
physical or internet friends. The world has been changed rapidly by the evolution of
technology; this has resulted into the use of technology as the best medium to explore the
wide area of Knowledge.
1
a school. Hoyle (1986) argued the schools are established with the aim of Imparting
knowledge and skills to those who go through them and behind all this is the idea of
enhancing good high school performance.
Social networking sites although has been recognized as an important resource for
Education today, studies however shows that students use social networking sites such as
Face book for fun, to kill time, to meet existing friends or to make new ones Although
it has been put forward that students spends much Time on participating in social
networking activities, with many students blaming the Various social networking sites
for their steady decrease in grade point averages , it also shows that only few students are
aware of the high school and Professional networking opportunities the sites offered.
Social network websites grab attention of the students and then diverts it towards non-
educational and inappropriate actions including Useless chatting. Whereas on the other
hand, reviewed that the students are socially connected with each other for sharing their
daily learning experiences and do conversation on several topics. Into (1997) argued that
extracurricular activities and high school activities are not enough to satisfy some student
those who are suffered by social networking isolation.
This shows that social networks are beneficial for the students as it contributes in their
learning experiences as well as in their High school life noted that the Internet is no
doubt evolution of technology but specifically social networks are extremely unsafe for
teenagers, social networks become hugely common and well-known in past few years.
According to Cain (2009) social network websites provide ease of connecting people to
one another; free of cost and after connecting one can post news, informative material
and other things including videos and pictures etc
Statement of Problem:
The world today is a global market in which the internet is the most important sort of
information. Since the advent of social network sites in the 1990s, it is assumed in some
2
quarters that the high school performance of students is facing a lot of neglect and
challenges.
Instead of students reading their books, they spend their time chatting and making
friends via the social network and this might definitely have influence on their high
school performance, because when you do not read, there is no way you can perform well
high school ally. It is a common sight to see a student chatting in sensitive and highly
organized places like church, mosque and lecture venues. Some are so carried away that
even as they are walking along the high way, they keep chatting.
The objective of this study generally is to examine the influence of Social Network on the
High school performance of students in high school. Specifically, the study seeks;
3
1. To examine the level of student addictiveness to social network and the influence on
their high school performance.
2. To determine the impact of social networkson students learning at high school level.
Research Questions:
This study has significance for the teachers, parents and students. This study will help the
teachers to know the influence that social network has on their students, so as to assist
them to enlighten and create awareness to the students on the possible influence it has on
them. The study will useful for parents in the sense that they will know the possible
effects this social network usage has on their children, so as to serve as watch-dog to their
children on the usage of the social networking site.
The study will enable the students to aware that, apart from the social benefits of this
social networking site, using the sites more than necessary will pose possible dangers to
their health. It will be relevant in assisting students inunderstanding the diversity of
social network. It will provide relevance material for students and other researchers
undertaking similar research. The study will help researchers with more information on
the Influence of social network on student’s high school performance.
4
Scope of the Study:
The focus of this research work is to primarily study the Influence of social network on
the High school performance of students. The study will comprise students of high
school.
Operational Definition:
As words may mean differently in different contexts, the following definitions are given
as the words used as intended to be understood for the purpose of this study.
Network: Are all those network technologies that are intended to reach a large
audience by mass communication. “They are messages communicated through a mass
medium to a number of people. High school: It is concerned with Studying from books
as opposed by a practical work.

CHAPTER TWO
LITERATURE REVIEW
INTRODUCTION
This chapter reviewed some of the numerous works done by scholars and researchers
which are directly related to this research work. In doing so, this chapter examined and
reviewed the following areas;
Social network is that means that employs mobile and web based technology to create
highly interactive platforms via which individuals and community share co-create,
discuss and Modifies user-generated content (Kietzmannn, 2012). Social network is a
phrase being tossed around a lot. It is a website that does not just give you information
6
but interact with you while giving you information. It is a group of internet based
application that allows the creation and exchange of users generated content. It is easy to
confuse social network with
Social news because we often refer to members of the news as the network. Adding to it,
that social news site is also social network site. Some network website includes:
Social Photo and Video Sharing: interact by sharing photos or videos and
Wikis: interact by adding articles and editing existing articles. (Wikipedia, wiki).
Social network refers to the means of interaction among people in which they
The internet usage effect of social network, in views of is that, students continue to
spend more time on the social network than any site. The total time spent on social
network across mobile devices increased by 37%, 121 billion minutes in July 2012
compared to 88 billion minutes in July 2011.
Kaplan and Heinlein (2010) classified social network into six different classes as follows:
7
3. Content Communities (YouTube)
Technology includes the blogs, picture sharing, music sharing, crowd sourcing, e-mail,
Instant messaging and voice over. These services could be integrated via social network
Aggregation platforms.
When social network is used in combination with mobile devices, it is called mobile
social Network. Social network is a group of mobile marketing application that allows the
creation and exchange of users generated content. Due to the fact that mobile social
network runs on mobile devices, it differs from traditional social network as it
incorporates new factors such as the current location of the user, time delay between
sending and receiving.Socialnetwork can be divided into four types:
Space-timers (location and time sensitive): exchange of message with relevance for
specific location and time (Face book, 2go, BB chat)
Slow-timers (neither location nor time sensitive): transfer traditional social network
application to mobile devices (reading a Wikipedia entry).
8
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK:
This theoretical framework shows the dependency and independency of factors gender,
frequent use of networking sites. Use of social networking websites depends upon the
above four factors so use of social networking is dependent and the above four are
independent variables; whereas, the high school performance depends upon the use of
social networking websites in this case, high school performance is a dependent variable
and the use of social networking sites is an independent variable.
Figure-1
Social Network
Marks
There are a number of social networks for learning but here we’ll look into few social
networksbroken down or grouped by types of software in use for information sharing and
in turn learningand knowledge dissemination.
9
Content Management Systems:
The main application of such software in learning context is sharing and distribution
ofresources, and communication among members and furthermore facilitation of group
works.
Examples are Face book, Bebo, MySpace and other related sites. They allow creation of
spacesand identity for communication, connectivity and maintenance of social contacts.
Pedagogicallyallows the creation of ideas and involvement of enhanced interaction
among members in sharingand dissemination of educational knowledge.
Syndication Systems:
The syndication systems are widely used for the pedagogical purposes of maintaining
links withnew content. It also allows filtering and customization of content for display
and on top of thatallowing multi-modal access to information.
These systems allow organization and classification of content by use of tags. They do
maintainthe collection of resources that can be shared and reused and categorizing of
resources.
A great content is very vital for learning in social networks. However the contributions
from the participants enhance the knowledge base shared. Online social networks to
fulfill social learning functions, to obtain validation and appreciation ofcreative work
10
through feedback on their profile pages, to get peer/alumni support and to helpwith
school-related tasks. In the learning point of view, we do not restrict on the use of
personal pages for personalization purposes but rather for sharing as the case of
discussion forums.
Communication, material and resource sharing. They further conducted an online survey
that included a total of 606 respondents and the results showed that the use of Face
bookhas influenced the respondents positively. The influence has been contributed by
means of relationship among educational usage with communication, collaboration,
material and resource Sharing.

Social Networking inHigh School:
It is used to describe any website that enables users to create public profiles within that
website and form relationship with other users of the same website who access their
profile.
It is used to describe community base website, online discussion forum, chat rooms and
other social space online. Commonly, the phrase “social networking sites” is used as an
umbrella term for all social network and computer-networked communication, including
but not limited to face book, Twitter, LinkedIn, and MySpace, as well as the inaugural
social networking sites.
Social links and a variety of additional services. For detailed analysis of social
networking, the following terms will be discussed:
Features
Constraints in Education
Through email and instant messaging, online communities are created where a gift
economy and reciprocal altruism are encouraged through co-operation. 2go and other
Social networking tools are increasingly the objective of scholarly research. Scholars in
many fields have begun to investigate the impact of social networking site, investigating
how such site may play into issues of identity, privacy, social, youth culture and
education.
Several website are beginning to tap into the power of the social networking model for
philanthropy. When one is chit-chatting, the content of the message reveal a lot about an
individual. In chatting, comments, photos, and status should speak less of an individual.
12
Kim in summary “It’s a vortex that sucks one in and one has no idea you’ve been
trapped.
The advent of social network platforms may also be impacting the way in which learners
engage with technology in general. For a number of years between digital natives and
digital immigrants has been considered a relatively accurate representative of the ease
with which people of a certain age rate, in particular, those born before and after 1980,
use technology.
Social networking and their educational uses are of interest to many researchers. Living
‘social networking site, like much else on the internet representing a moving target for
researchers and policy makers.
In the past, social networking were viewed as a distraction and offered no educational
benefit. Blocking this social network was a form of protection for students against
wasting time, bullying and privacy protection. In an educational setting, 2go and BB chat
is seen by instructors and educators as frivolous time wasting and distraction from school
work.
Cyber bullying has been an issue of concern with social networking site. An online
survey based on 9-19 years old and above discovered that students received bulling
comments online. Social networking, often include a lot of personal information posted
publicly and many believe that sharing personal information and the easy communication
vehicle that social networking opens the door to sexual predators.
However, there is evidence of contradiction to this; 69% of social network using teens
and 85% adults said people are mostly kind to one another. The national school board
association reports that almost 60% of the students who use social network talk about
educational topics online and more than 50% talk about school work. Yet the vast
majority of school district has stringent rules against nearly all forms of social network
13
during school hours. Social networking focused on supporting relationship between
teachers and students.
Social network are also emerging as online year book for private and public use. It allows
anyone from the general public to register and connect to others. It allows participant the
opportunity for just in time learning and engagement and prescribed curriculum..
Examples of SNS
There are varieties of social networks like 2go, Whatsapp Messenger, blackberry
Messenger, face book, and twitter for people to have access to.
2go is a Social Networking Site, chat, and instant messaging (IM) application. It enables
users to chat on their mobile phones free. You can meet users and 2go users as friends.
Chat room son different topics areopened whereyou canjoin inthe discussion and
socialize with others and also, 2go have gateways that enable users chat with friends on.
One of the greatest points of 2go chat is its simplicity and light weight, making it
available to lots of low-end phones. 2go runs on any java enabled phone, Nokia, LG,
Samsung, and Sony Ericson. Blackberry users can use 2go on their Pc as part of an
experimental service by the company and with it, they can chat anywhere and anytime of
the day as they so please.
Though many arguments can be made about the possible risks of adolescent social
Networking, it is important to point out the benefits of these websites as well. Many high
schools have started to use these sites to promote education, keep students up to
date withassignments, and offer help to those in need (Boyd, 2007). In general, the
Internet and social networking sites can be a positive influence on adolescents. Social
networking sites.
Finally, high school students use these sites as tools to obtain information and resources
for high level preparation and future planning. For example, students applying forvisit
14
profiles of the school students to view pictures and read blogs of past students to
determine whether the school would be a good fit (Boyd & Ellison, 2007).
Many students cannot go for two-three hours without checking and updating their profiles
on these social networks even at the detriment of other activities such as educational and
career pursuit. the excessive use of the internet and the failure to control this usage which
seriously harms a person’s life.
It has been observed in recent times that students have unlimited access to the internet as
well as the social network. Students connect with computer to send and receive
information’s anywhere on the globe. The manufacturing and distribution of equally
sophisticated cellular phones has complicated the situation, as students no longer need to
visit a cybercafé before they send and receive messages. Some school are so equipped
that there is internet connection made available within the school premises as well as in
the library.
Wikipedia and blogs are the main resource centers for students as attention have been
shifted from making research in the library to overall dependence on theses social
platforms. It is a common thing to see a student reading in the library and putting the
books aside on hearing the sound of a ping on the phone.
Though there have been many social, economic, and environmental factors that have
added to the pressure of high school students in the past ten years.
15
However, with more and more students being preoccupied with social network networks
and technological social lives, how will this affect their studies? It is estimated that even
those students who do high level high school.
The top high school areas that many school professionals are concerned about are English
Social networking began as being a niche activity, though time it's a phenomenon. The
web sites are employed in many ways like developing metropolitan areas, speaking,
blogging etc. Additionally different institutions even nowadays are developing groups on
several Websites (Saba Mehmood 2013).
The improved usage of Websites has become a worldwide phenomenon for quite some
time. What began out as being a hobby for several computer literate people has converted
social norm and existence-style for individuals from around the globe .Teens and
teenagers have especially recognized these internet sites to be able to contact their peers,
share information, reinvent their personas, and showcase their social lives .
While using the increase of technology helpful for getting together with others along
with the recognition on the internet, Internet sites are now being an activity that's done
mainly on the web, with Website,
According to Khan U (2009), social network users often time experience poor
performance negatively associated with high school performance of student and is a lot
more momentous than its advantages.
16
Problems in high school
This has caused distractions during instruction time and has had a negative impact
on the learning environment.
There are many issues concerning students in high school student and social networking
site participation. On one hand, there may be benefits for students who use these sites
properly and appropriately. Other research suggests that there are clear risks involved
when students become too consumed with the Internet and social networking websites.
It was discovered that social networking sites are the most common used social network
networksamong students and also Wikipedia has the main resort point for students for
research purposes. Students engage themselves with one activity or the other on the
various social networks on day to day activities. However, high levels school spend more
time on Face book, Twitter and other social network through smart phones that are now
in abundance among these youths.
Many student cannot go for two-three hours without checking and updating their profiles
on these social networks even at the detriment of other activities such as
educational and career pursuit. Smart phones, android phones as well as tablets were
seento be the major ways through which students gain easy access to the internet to be on
the various social network platforms.
17
Performance of students
Hence, for the purposes of this research project, the researcher will examine the level of
student addictiveness to social network, how often they use them, how they use them, and
how this is affecting their high school studies. A comparison will also be made between
male students and female students, since much research has shown a difference in
SNS participation based on gender as well as in age. At the conclusion of this research
project, there will be a better understanding regarding students in In high school student
and whether or not they are able to balance a life of social networking and high school
performance.

CHAPTER THREE
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Introduction
This chapter presents the method and procedure that was applied in this study. It was
organized under the following sub-headings: Research Design, Population of the Study,
Sample and Sampling Technique, Research Instrument, Validity of the Instrument,
Reliability of the Instrument, Method of Data Collection, and Method of Data Analysis
Research Design
The research design adopted for the study was a descriptive survey. This design is
considered apt because it enables the researcher to generate data through the standardized
collection procedures based on highly structured research instrument(s) and well defined
study concepts and related variables.
The population of this study, the primary data is used. The primary data for this research
study will be collected through a questionnaire; the data of questionnaire was collected
from 100 respondents. In addition, this collected data lead this research study to the
exploration of the impact of social network on high school student’s education
performance. At the same time, literature review of this research study will provided the
secondary. Source of secondary data, which is, gathered from published research articles.
A total sample size of 378 students were randomly selected using confidence interval of 5
and confidence level of 95% (0.05) from the total population of 24,661 full-time students
in the In high school student.
19
Validity of the Instrument
The designed questionnaire was submitted to the project supervisor for vetting, correction
and approval before distributing it to the respondents.
The reliability of the research instrument was determined using a split half test using
theodd and even numbered items to form. The two administered to a sample of students
from a school not selected for the main study. The Pearson CorrelationCoefficient
wasused todetermine thereliability ofthe instrument. A co-efficient value of 0.65
indicated that the research instrument was reliable; hence it was adopted for getting the
desired information for the study.
The researcher collected the needed data through the use of questionnaire and its
administration in the selected faculties. The administration of the questionnaire was
carried out by the researcher. A total of 378 copies of the questionnaire were distributed
to elicit responses from the students and retrieved on the spot by the researcher. A total of
22 questionnaires were missing while 32 were wrongly filled leaving the researcher with
324 valid questionnaires.
Responses from the questionnaire were analyzed using the descriptive statistics
2
offrequency counts and percentage, and inferential statistics of Chi-square(x ).
Descriptive statistics of frequency counts and percentages were used in analyzing
demographic variables and research questions while the inferential statistics of Chi-
2
square(x ) was also used to test the stated hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance.

The hypothesis that states Students’ addictiveness to social network has no significant
influence on their high school performance was tested using table 8. The finding of this
study shows that Students’ addictiveness to social network has a significant influence on
their high school performance.
Social network have become a major part of the lives of the students of today. The
hypothesis which states that Student’s exposure to social network has no significant
influence on students’ high school performance was tested. In testing this hypothesis,
table 9 was used.
The finding of this study shows that Student’s exposure to social network has
significant influence on students’ high school performance..
The third hypothesis which states that Use of social network do no significantly influence
thehigh school performance of the students in high school student was tested as well. In
testing this hypothesis, table 10 was used.

Conclusion
The result from the findings of this study showed that, though Social network have
negative effects on teenagers such as lack of privacy, distracting students from their high
school work, taking most of their productive time, and such like, they also have benefits
and can be used appropriately. For instance, students can form online communities in
order to plan for a project, have group discussions about class material, or use the
Social networking sites(SNS) as a way to keep in contact when a student who has been
absent needs to be updated on current high school information.
The findings of this study and earlier ones showed some noteworthy results. The first
independent variable influencing the high school performance of students, that is,
social network participation was negatively related with students’ outcome, while
the other independent variables were positively related with students’ outcome. The
results of this study suggest that lecturers should come up with a template on how their
students can maximize the benefits of Social network, that school management should
incorporate rules and regulations on the use of the social network in the school and, that
the government should put in place adequate control measures to regulate their use
among students and lecturers.

the In high school student. Because they share the same characteristics with other
students. Suggestions for Further Studies This study serves as a basis for further research
study on Social network and the high school performance of students. Similar studies
should be conducted in other states of the federation so as to bring about improvement in
