ABSTRACT

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the lecturers’ awareness and utilization

of Intelligent Tutoring System for Teaching in Kwara State. The study was specifically

to: i) examine the level of awareness of intelligent tutoring systems for teaching among

university lecturers in Kwara State. ii) determine the level of utilization of intelligent

tutoring systems for teaching among university lecturers in Kwara State. iii) investigate

the attitude of university lecturers toward the use of intelligent tutoring systems for

teaching in Kwara State

The method adopted to accomplish the objective of the study involved the use of a

researchers designed questionnaire. The population consists of lecturers from the

University of Ilorin and Al-Hikmah University. A simple random sampling technique

was used to select a sample of 15 lecturers from each school.

The findings were summarized as follows:

the university lecturers are very aware of Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) for teaching

and there is significant difference in the level of awareness of male and female university

lecturers on ITS for learning with male lecturers being more aware than female lecturers.

the university lecturers make use of Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) for teaching and

there is no significant difference in the level of utilization of ITS for learning between Al-

Hikmah University and University of Ilorin Lecturers.

xiii
University lecturers show positive attitude towards the use of Intelligent Tutoring System

(ITS) for teaching and there is no difference in the attitude of university lecturers towards

the utilization of ITS for teaching based on Gender.

This study concludes that sampled lecturers of the higher institutions of learning showed

a positive attitude towards the use of the system, they make well use of the system for

teaching and this consequently mean, deductively, that they are aware of the Intelligent

tutoring system. Although, the awareness varied based on gender, but all other variables

did not vary based on the awareness of the lecturers.

However, it was recommended that educational governing bodies should make

regulations on being trained to use the Intelligent Tutoring System to increase its

awareness among University lecturers, school authorities should put in place and

incorporate Intelligent Tutoring Systems in courses that can be taught with the system.

This would increase the level of utilization of the system for teaching and incentives and

motivation for the use of the Intelligent Tutoring System should be made available to

lecturers to maintain a positive attitude to the use of the system for teaching.
