THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The importance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in food production

extends beyond national borders. In the global food industry, PPE serves as a critical

line of defense against potential hazards. According to the World Health Organization

(WHO) 2020,PPE,such as gloves, masks, and protective clothing, is essential in

preventing the transmission of contaminants, including pathogens, from workers to food

products. By wearing appropriate PPE, workers can minimize the risk of cross-

contamination and protect the health and safety of consumers worldwide. Moreover, the

Food and Agriculture Organization (2019) emphasizes that the proper use of PPE in

food production is a public health priority, as it contributes to the overall goal of ensuring

safe and high-quality food for populations across the globe.

In the Philippines, the food production industry plays a significant role in the

country’s economy and sustenance of its population. The Department of Agriculture

(2020) recognizes the importance of maintaining food safety standards to protect

consumers and promote economic growth. PPE is a crucial component of these


standards. The Department of Labor and Employment (2019) sets occupational safety

health standards that include the use of PPE in various industries, including food

production. Food safety is paramount concern in the food processing, and the proper

use Of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety

and Quality of food.

Additionally, the improper use of Personal Protective Equipment during food

Production can have significant overall effects, including an increased risk of processor

Injuries due to the failure to use PPE properly, such as not wearing gloves or not using

Appropriate footwear, which can lead to cuts, burns, slips, and falls, resulting in physical

Harm, lost productivity, and increased healthcare costs. Moreover, the improper use of

PPE can compromise food safety by allowing for the transfer of bacteria from raw

Ingredients to other surfaces or food items if gloves are not changed regularly or not

Worn when required, increasing foodborne illnesses. Similarly, inadequate use of aprons

Or hairnets can introduce physical contaminants, such as dirt or hair, into food,

Compromising its safety and quality.

This research will gain knowledge about The Advantage of Personal Protective

Equipment during food processing that will surely help the Grade 12 FFP students and

To those students at Bocboc East National Highschool, who are planning to take the
Food Fish Processing (FFP) strand Where the use of PPE are involved.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to determine the Advantage of Personal Protective Equipment(PPE)

during food production of Grade 12 Food Fish Processing (FFP) students. Furthermore, it seeks

to answer the research questions : 1. Why personal protective equipment (PPE) need to wear

during food processing? 2. What are the different types of PPE and its uses? 3. How does the use

of PPE contribute to the preventing of food contamination and physical harm during food

processing?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of this study will benefited the following:

STUDENTS. This study can help students understand the importance of

personal Safety and hygiene in food production. They will learn that wearing Personal

Protective Equipment (PPE) can prevent contamination of food and physical harm,

And enhance overall safety in the food production area.

TEACHERS. This study can provide insights into the Advantage of Personal

Protective Equipment (PPE) during food production. This knowledge will help

Into their teaching strategies to effectively convey the importance of PPE to their
Students.

FUTURE RESEARCHERS. The study can serve as a valuable reference for

Future researchers on similar topics. It can provide foundation on which new

Information and research questions can be built.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study will only focus on The Advantage of Wearing Personal Protective

Equipment During Food Production given by researchers which are students that use

The PPE and the Grade 12 FFP students. The respondents of this study will come from

Grade 12 FFP students and an exact total of 29 students will be the respondents of this

Research. The whole study and process will be conducted in Bocboc East National

Highschool.

DEFINITION OF TERMS
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Refers to specialized equipment or

Clothing worn by processor to protect themselves from potential hazards and

Risks in the workplace. PPE can include items such as gloves, aprons, hairnets

and masks.

Food Production: Refers to the process of preparing, handling, and

manufacturing Food products. It involves various activities such as cooking, baking,

cutting, packaging, And storing food items.

Grade 12 FFP Students: Students who are enrolled in the Grade 12 level

And pursuing the FOOD FISH PROCESSING strand.

Advantage: Refer to the positive outcomes or benefits that arise from

Wearing PPE in terms of safety and hygiene.
