Basa Pilipinas is USAID/Philippines’ flagship basic education activity in support of the Philippine
Government’s early grade reading program. Implemented in close collaboration with the
Department of Education (DepEd), Basa Pilipinas aims to improve the reading skills for at least
one million early grade students in Filipino, English and two mother tongue languages (Ilokano and
Sinugbuanong Binisaya). This will be achieved by improving reading instruction, reading delivery
systems, and access to quality reading materials.

 A picky eater, Blanca eats only
longganisa. One day, she goes home
crying because her team lost in a relay at
school. She could not run as fast as the
other children because she does not eat
vegetables or drink milk. The next day,
mother packs her fish and vegetables for
lunch but she would not eat her food.
She goes home very hungry and smells
the food that mother has prepared.
She is so hungry that she eats the
pansit, hot soup and meat, and finds
everything delicious! From then on, she
eats different kinds of food that give her
energy.
