1. (a) What is variation in Mathematics

2. Translate each of the following sentences into a mathematical formula.


(i) The distance D an automobile can travel is directly proportional to the time t that
it travels at a constant speed.
(ii) The volume V of a given mass of gas is inversely proportional to the pressure p
exerted on it.
(iii) An automobile’s braking distance d is directly proportional to the square of the
automobile’s speed v
(iv) Every particle of matter in the universe attracts every other particle with a force F
that is directly proportional to the product of the masses m1 and m2 of the particles, and it
is inversely proportional to the square of the distance d between them.

3. (i) If A varies inversely as B and A = 2 when B = 10, find A when B = 4.


(ii) If x α y² and x = 8 when y = 4, find y when x = 32.

4. (a) x varies directly as the square of y and inversely as the cube root of z and x = 2, when
y = 4, z = 8. What is the value of y when x = 3, and z = 27?

5. (a) Identify the quadratic expression which are perfect square. Hence or otherwise

(b) Solve the following quadratic expression by factorization


((i) x2 − 5x + 6=0
(ii) 2x2 −7x −3=0
(III) 3x2 +8x−5=0
