Question #1 (12 Marks)

Answer following questions.

I) A pitot tube is used in a fluid flow to measure:

(a) The static pressure,

(b) The stagnation pressure,
(c) The flow speed at the stagnation point,
(d) Dynamic pressure,
(e) The venturi pressure.

II) If force ( ), length ( ), and time ( ) are selected as the basic dimensions, then the dimensions
on mass are:

(a) ⁄T2
(b) L2⁄
(c) T2⁄
(d) ⁄L2
(e) T2/

III) Specific gravity of liquid is defined as:

(a) the ratio of the weight of the fluid per unit volume to its volume,
(b) the ratio of the fluid’s density to the density of water,
(c) the ratio of the fluid’s pressure to its specific weight,
(d) the ratio of the fluid’s specific weight to the specific weight of water,
(e) both answers b) and d)

Question #2 (24 Marks)

A differential manometer is attached to two tanks shown below. Calculate the pressure difference
between Chamber A (PA) and Chamber B (PB). Note: the density for Mercury is 13,550 [kg/m3],
Carbon tetrachloride is 1,594 [kg/m3], and 912 [kg/m3] for SAE 30 Oil.

Solution

P − P = −γ(Z − Z ) Where P1 = PA and P2 = PB

P = P + γ(Z − Z ) Where ɣ = ρg and Z2-Z1 = hX
= P − [( ∙ ) ∙ ℎ ] − [( ∙ ) ∙ ℎ ] + [( ∙ )∙ℎ ]
= P − [(0.912 ∙ 9.81) ∙ 1.1] − [(13.55 ∙ 9.81) ∙ 0.3] + [(1.59 ∙ 9.81) ∙ 0.8]
= P − [(8.95) ∙ 1.1] − [(132.93) ∙ 0.3] + [(15.60) ∙ 0.8]
= P − [9.842] − [39.88] + [12.48]
= P − [37.24]
= P − 37.24

− P = −37.24 [ ]

Question #3 (24 Marks)
Air flows through the following device. If the flowrate is large enough, the pressure within the
constriction will be low enough to draw the water up into a tube. Determine the flowrate, Q, and
the pressure needed at section (1) to draw the water into section (2). Neglect compressibility and
viscous effect.
