PSC6-CB/-C PSC6-CB/-C overview

1 PSC6-CB/-C overview
Main functions of PSC6-CB/-C
The Power Supply for Cartridge PSC6-CB/-C is a DC voltage converter that provides the
+5.1 V, -5.1 V and +3.35 V output voltages from the DC voltages needed by the DX 200
network element. (In the circuit diagrams, these voltages are designated as follows: +5.1
V = +5V, +3.35 V = +3.3V and -5.1 V = -5V.)
The PSC6-CB/-C plug-in unit is powered by the voltage from the batteries via the PDFU-
B power distribution fuse unit. It regulates this raw DC voltage into accurate +5.1 V,
+3.35 V and -5.1 V output voltages while providing galvanic isolation between the battery
voltage and the output voltages. The PSC6-CB/-C also provides an alarm if the output
voltages are too high or too low, and filters out any voltage spikes received from the
batteries.
Operating environment of PSC6-CB/-C
PSC6-CB/-C supplies voltages needed by the cartrige through the backplane of the
cartridge. In the figures below PSC6-CB/-C is assembled into the MC2C-A and SD4C-C
cartridges(POWER).

Structure of PSC6-CB/-C PSC6-CB/-C

3 Structure of PSC6-CB/-C

3.1 Mechanical structure of PSC6-CB/-C

The PSC6-CB/-C plug-in unit is an open switching regulator type DC voltage converter. It
is equipped with an aluminium cooling plate the size of the entire printed wired board.
The size of the Printed Circuit Board of the PSC6–C is 233.4 mm x 220 mm and it
requires a 20.3 mm wide space. The PSC6-CB/-C is connected to the cartridge with
three female Hard Metric connectors, two L-type (J3 and J2) and one C-type connector
(J1). The front panel contains two LED indicators which indicate the operation of the
PSC6-CB/-C and an input current switch. The switch lever is equipped with a lock which
prevents random operation. The front panel also contains levers for easy installation and
removal from the cartridge.

3.2 Logical structure of PSC6-CB/-C

The PSC6-CB/-C is divided into the following logical blocks, as illustrated by the block
diagram below:

3.2.1 Input protection

The input circuits of the PSC6-CB/-C plug-in unit contain the common sections and
functions of all switching regulators. The input voltage circuit of the PSC6-CB/-C has
been galvanically isolated from the output voltage circuits. The printed wired board
contains a 250V/12A fast acting fuse which provides overcurrent protection for the
PSC6-CB/-C from internal short-circuit failure. Input revese polarity protection is
employing a 600V diode to blow off the input fuse in order to galvanically isolate input of
the power supply unit from input battery in case that battery is reversely connected into
the input terminal.

3.2.2 Inrush current limiter

The inrush current limiter limits the input inrush current by employing active MOSFET to
constantly charge up the input capacitor. After the inrush MOSFETs saturately turned on,
the biasing converter is then powered up.

3.2.3 EMI filter

Interference filtering
The interference generated by the power supply unit is filtered by a common mode
choke by using X and Y capacitors. The common mode choke has a given inductance is
600uH+/-10%, and the stray inductance is 8uH +/-10%. Rated current is 20A at a
temperatute rise of 40C°.
The X and Y capacitors are SMD ceramic type capacitors. The rated voltage of Y
capacitor is 1kV. The rated voltage of X capacitor is 100V. The Y capacitors are
connected to FG at the front panel
The EMI filter is pi-filter consisting of a 600uH CM choke and CX1, C10~C16. A
differential mode filter is utilized for the 8uH leakage inductance of the CM choke
together with Cy4~Cy7.
The varistor is an 85Vdc type.

3.2.4 Bias power

Bias power supplies power to all circuitry in this power supply unit. It utilizes a flyback
converter with an operation frequency of 250KHz. It feeds a biasing voltage of 10V to all
circuitries. UC2843 is employed for a PWM controller

3.2.5 Output monitoring

The output monitoring block monitors output voltage deviation and activates the alarm
circuitry. After over voltage has been detected, the output OVP disables the converters.

DN0592338 Issue: 1-1 © 2016 Nokia 11

Structure of PSC6-CB/-C PSC6-CB/-C

3.2.6 Output Over Voltage Protection

The output Over Voltage Protection monitors output voltage deviation at all outputs
according to over voltage protection trip point. It disables the converters when an over
voltage occurs at the output. The OVP protection is auto recovery type, automatically
recovering to the nominal output voltage after the fault is removed.

3.2.7 Input UVLO/OVLO

The Input UVLO/OVLO monitors the input voltage in order to enable/disable the bias
power after detecting an exceptional input voltage range. It disables the main converters
when input voltage goes higher or lower than the input protection trip point. When input
voltage goes out of nominal range, Q742 is turned on and all converters stop working.

3.2.8 +3.35V, +5.1V, -5.1V converters

The +3.35V, +5.1V and -5.1V converters of the PSC6–C are symmetrical half-bridge
converters which employ a peak current mode control with an operation frequency of
125KHz. High-Low side driver ICs are used to drive primary MOSFETs.
Synchronous rectification is used on the +3.35V and +5.1V converters. A Schottky diode
is used for secondary rectification in the -5.1V converter.
The transformer core is assembled directly on the Printed Circuit Board. A EI32/6/20 3F3
ferrite core is used for the +3.35V converter and the +5.1V converter. A EI22/6/16 3F3
ferrite core is used for the -5.1V converter.
A ceramic type capacitor are used for the input bulk capacitors, input filter capacitor in
DC/DC converters and output filter capacitors. An organics type capacitor (POSCAP®) is
employed for the output capacitors.
The output inductors for the +3.35V and the +5.1V output are directly assembled onto
the Printed Circuit Board with a gapped EI32/6/20 3F3 ferrite core with a rated current of
50A. The output choke for the -5.1V is an SMT type with a rated current of 18A.

3.2.9 Synchronization generator

The Synchronization generator receives periodic impulses from the +5.1V converter with
a 250KHz frequency which are injected into the +3.35V and -5.1V converters as falling
egde triggering in order to synchronize all converters.

3.2.10 Alarm and supervision

Tasks
The alarm and supervision block

• activates an alarm when the output voltage is above or below the set limits for
0.5mS. The length of the alarm is a minimum of 50 mS. The alarming circuitry is an
open-drain type with series of 10 Ohms resister.
• activates when an alarm after receiving a signal from the alarm test circuitry. The
alarm test circuit is operated manually.
• activates the red LED indicator on the front panel of the plug-in unit.

PSC6-CB/-C Operation of PSC6-CB/-C

4 Operation of PSC6-CB/-C
The cooling extrusion on the front panel of the PSC6-CB/-C plug-in unit contains
countersunk LED indicators and a power switch. The front panel is also equipped with an
opening for a plug-in unit extractor. The front panel of the PSC6-CB/-C looks like this:

LED indicators
The LED indicators have the following meanings:

• Neither LED illuminated: The PSC6-CB/-C receives no battery voltage or the fuse
has blown.
• Red LED illuminated: An output voltage is deviating from the allowed limits, or the
Power switch is in the OFF position.
• Green LED illuminated: Normal operation, that is, everything is in order.
Switch
The power switch must be in the lower position (OFF) whenever the PSC6-CB/-C is
being installed into the cartridge or removed from it. The PSC6-CB/-C starts when the
switch is turned to the upper position (ON).

g Note: The switch is equipped with a lock which prevents it from being turned
inadvertently. In order to turn the switch, it must first be pulled out slightly.
