Most Essential Learning Competency
● Explain how species diversity increases
the probability of adaptation and
survival of organisms in changing
environments. (S10LTIIIh-41)
● Explain the relationship between
population growth from carrying
capacity. (S10LT-IIIi-42)

Biodiversity and Stability
a. define biodiversity and stability;
b. identify low and high biodiversity;
c. differentiate the values of species; and
d. appreciate the importance of biodiversity
Biodiversity
● Bio’ means life, and ‘diversity’ means
differentiation or variation in distribution.
● It refers to the differentiation of lives
involving flora and fauna in a particular
locality.
● In another sense presence of different
kinds of organisms in a particular habitat
● It is the totality of genus, species, and
ecosystem in a region or the world.
● Describes how varied are life forms in
different ecosystem
Types of Biodiversity
Ecological Diversity
- when ecological factors or climatic factors cause
diversity
Types of Biodiversity
Genetic Diversity
- when the variation of genetic constituents causes
diversity
Types of Biodiversity
Species Diversity
- when the different species of plants cause diversity
Types of Biodiversity

Taxonomic Diversity
- the distribution of species among different groupings
ORGANISMS
Organisms
- Part of biodiversity and may
be economically and
ecologically valuable
- Important in maintaining
balance in the ecosystem
All organisms are
interdependent on
one another!
• How do living
things depend on
each other?
- If one organism in the
food web decreases,
then others will either
increase or decrease
- If the mouse
population decreases
what will happen to
another species?
What happens to
an ecosystem
when
biodiversity
decreases?

Ecosystem stability decreases!

Stability – the ability of the different populations
of organisms to survive an environmental change.
How does great biodiversity
maintain ecosystem stability?

In an ecosystem with
great biodiversity
If one organism dies off,
another may step in and
take over its NICHE!
Which ecosystem has greater
stability?

Rainforest Grassland

The rainforest has greater stability because it has

greater biodiversity!
Why is
biodiversity
important?

Relationship Between
Population Growth and
Carrying Capacity
Population
A group of
organisms of the
same species that
live in a certain or
community
An increase in
population of an
organism can be
indicators of
potential
problems in
organism’s
environment
Factors that can cause a population’s size to change
● Birth Rate (natality) – the
number of births in a
population

● Death Rate (mortality) – the

number of organisms that are
dying in a population
Population Density

- refers to the number of organisms

per unit area
Population’s density is very low Population’s density is very high

Few organisms crowd into a A lot of organisms crowded into a

certain area certain area
The maximum population size of the species that the
environment can sustain is called the carrying capacity
Factors limiting a population growth
● Density-independent
factors – if the
population’s density
does not directly
influence changes in
population’s growth

● Density-dependent factors –
if the population’s growth is
regulated and influenced by
population density
Environmental Problems and Issues
● Forrest Destruction

Habitat destruction Overuse Pollution
