CHAPTER 1

PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

Life in a dormitory/boarding house can be very different from life in one's

own home. In a living quarter away from home, students encounter complex and

transgressing barriers of culture, different values, and socioeconomic status, so that

something will always happen to him/her in the interaction with other boarders.

Students who stay in dormitories/boarding houses are usually conditioned by their

hopes and goals, which will lead to frustrations if threatened.

Living in a boarding house is a common choice for students with a lowbudget.

There could be numerous choices for a student who is willing to opt for on-campus

housing; less time of travel from boarding house, less hassle in terms of activities and

school works, and lessen expenses from commuting.

Student budgeting primarily refers to management of financial expenses

within their assigned budget. Several factors make the behavior of students dynamic

and different from each other. These factors can be technical as well as psychological

and controllable or uncontrollable. The major challenge that students face is the

difficulty to budget their expenses and save a proportional amount every month for

contingent events.

Most of the students get their monthly allowance from their parents and are

answerable to them for their expenditure. Higher family income can contribute

majorly to good academic performance of the students but lower family income

should not be an excuse for poor performance

This research has been quantitative and qualitative and contributed to

increasing understanding of boarders, their academic and social-emotional wellbeing

outcomes, and the factors contributing to these. Research in this area is important

because boarding (and other residential education settings) is often a necessary

educational pathway for many students for a variety of reasons (e.g., living in remote

areas, parents working overseas, choosing education outside home country, etc.).

Indeed, investigating boarding school effects involves quite a unique research design

in that boarding and day students are educated in the same classrooms, taught by the

same teachers, and receive the same instruction and syllabus. Thus, boarders may be

considered something of a “treatment” group and day students something of a

“comparison” group, with most curricular classroom and instructional features held

constant.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to understand the Financial problems among the Student

Boarder Specifically it seeks to answer to the following questions:

1. How does student boarders allocate their monthly allowance despite the challenges

they faced?

2. How do student boarders overcome those challenges

Hypothesis

Ho1: There is no significant relationship between the challenges of the financial

problem among the student boarders

Significance of the Study

This study gives new knowledge nevertheless this study is of great

significance of the following:

Parent. This study would provide an informtion that they eventually enable he parents

to be informed

Student. This study would provide the students to understand the challeges among the

studenst boarders in terms of financial situation.

Future Researcher. This study would provide a new information

Scope and Limitation

This study focuses among the challenges of financial problem of student

boarders. This study was intended only to the Senior High School students boarder of

Surigao del Norte National High School. This study will be conducting during the

S.Y. 2023-2024.
