INTRODUCTION

Budgeting allowance for students is a critical financial resource that

can have a big impact on their daily expenses. As young adults begin their

educational path, they frequently confront financial issues, making it critical to have a

planned budgeting structure in place to manage their expenditures. They learn the

necessity of prioritizing their expenses by managing a fixed allocation. Parents and

guardians are the most common source of student allowances. Their motivations for

providing allowances vary, but they all share their goal to teach financial education,

develop responsibility, and prepare their children for future financial independence.

The allowance given by parents and guardians can range from small amounts to

meet necessary expenses, such as lunch or transportation, to bigger amounts aimed

to cover a broader range of costs, such as extracurricular activities or future savings.

Money management skills are one of the primary advantages of introducing

budgeting allowances for students. They learn how to successfully budget, keep

track of their expenses, and prepare for the future. These abilities include the ability

to distinguish between needs and wants, create financial objectives, and make wise

choices about how to allocate their resources. It can also promote social

responsibility and awareness. Students who budget may become more conscious of

their impact on the environment and society. For example, when they are mindful of

their spending, they may be more likely to support sustainable and ethical products

and services. Moreover, effective budgeting can alleviate financial stress and anxiety.

When students have a clear understanding of their financial situation and a well-

structured budget, they are better equipped to handle unexpected expenses and

financial emergencies. This can lead to reduced stress and an overall sense of

financial security.

One of the biggest disadvantages of budgeting allowances for students is the

potential lack of guidance. Many students may not receive sufficient budgeting

education or guidance, which can lead to financial mismanagement. Without help,

people may struggle to make informed financial decisions, potentially leading to

financial difficulties. Some students may find it difficult to stick to their budgets,

especially if their allowances are excessively high. Overspending is a widespread

problem that can lead to financial issues and an unsustainable lifestyle. Students

may easily deplete the amount they received if they lack discipline and self-control.

Budgeting can be challenging for students, especially if they have no prior

experience. Budgeting can be challenging for students, especially if they have no

prior experience. The stress of trying to make pay the bills and stick to a budget can

cause anxiety and mental health problems. Fear of running out of money can have a

negative impact on a student's mental health.

Finally, a lack of direction may impair a student's ability to budget

properly. If their parents or guardians do not provide them with the required guidance

and help, students may find it difficult to make sensible financial decisions and
benefit from their experiences. For senior high school students managing their daily

expenses, the budgeting allowance offers both pros and cons. On the plus side, it

promotes important life skills such as financial independence and financial planning.

However, several critical elements must be considered, such as financial limits,

potential financial hardship, unrealistic expectations, and the need for advice. Finally,

a well-rounded strategy that combines a budgeting allowance with proper guidance

and training will empower children to make sensible financial decisions that will

benefit them in the future.

Theoretical Framework

Economic Theory (Lewis 1957) explains how the concept or marginal utility a

traditional microeconomics theory could be used to be in determine the relative

financial value of goods to substantiate allocation of resources that in the aggregate

would improve financial performance of a corporate. This theory emphasizes on

procedures that were applicable for budgeting while considering all resources as

scarce and appropriate for attaining the financial performance:

Institutional Theory (Covaleski et al 1996; Baxter and Chua, 2003) based

research tends to focus on the budgeting process as a whole (which can be

considered the budgeting variable of interest): the interrelated analysis,

interpretations, and negotiations that constitute budgeting. That based research

tends to focus on the whole budgeting process. Interrelated analyzes, definitions and

budgeting negotiations.

Bruner (1966). Jean Piaget (1960), this theory, discovery learning refers to

the process of obtaining knowledge through one effort, in the classroom, discovery

learning often occurs through structured of directed activities that were required

students to manipulate, investigate, and explore materials that may lead them to

discover important principles or relationship. These theories will support the study in

determining the relationship between budgeting skills and academic performance.

Definition of Terms

The following terms are defined conceptually and operationally for better

comprehension on related literatures in this study.

Allowance refers to money that is given to someone, usually on a regular

basis, in order to help them pay for the things that they need.

Budgeting refers to the process of calculating how much money you must

earn or save during a particular period of time, and of planning how you will spend it.

Expenses refers to the money that something costs you or that you need to

spend in order to do something.

Finance refers to the management of large amounts of money, especially by

governments or large companies.

Managing refers for having executive or supervisory; control or authority.

Money refers to any object that is generally accepted as payment for goods

and services and repayment of debts in a given country or socio-economic context.

Planning refers to the process of deciding in detail how to do something

before you actually start to do it.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the review of literature in studies related to the present

study.

Foreign Literatures

Based on study by Shahryar, S., S. et. al (2014). Recently, interest in

exploring professional financial issues mainly money management was shown to be

highly increased due to the societal awareness of its benefits. The skill of money

management is a major tool in exercising control over them to obtain quality life as

working adults.

As stated by Caldwell (2017), there is a motion in the works to teach

fundamental personal finance to high school learners before they graduate. A budget

is clearly the key to financial success. Students assume that student loans are the

only way to pay for education, but there are other potential such as scholarships,

financial help, and work opportunities.

According to Bona (2017), the study compares spending and saving

behaviors of college and SHS students using questionnaires. It found no significant

differences in spending, but students spent more on school projects and

assignments. The methodology used is similar to the study of Bona, but focuses on

SHS students.

According to Manju (2016), asserts that maintaining a tight grip on your cash

expenses and controlling how you spend amounts is not only a good habit, but it also

helps to financial success, which is critical in the future. Because youth play an

increasingly crucial role in our country, it is critical to monitor their financial activity.

As stated by Birari and co. et al. (2014), discuss the spending and saving

habits of young people. They demonstrate how western culture and increasing living

expenses have altered these purchasing habits all through time. The findings of this
survey demonstrate that the youth spend a significant amount of their allowance on

branded things.

According to Schick (2013), noted that new methods of budgeting should be

considered to take account of results and in order to seek alignment between budget

decisions and corporate objectives. Once the annual budget is completed, a review

should be rendered of the process to assess what may have worked during the

process and what may not have worked.

According to Kozina and Ponikvar (2015), defined financial understanding as

a collection of elements of human capital that are employed in financial activities to

promote a person's financial stability.

According to Krachowska (2015), financial literacy includes the capacity to

secure personal income, the ability to make cost judgments, understanding the

repercussions of personal and current decision making on current and future

earnings, and job market orientation.

As stated by C. P. Guthrie et al. The goal of the Personal Budget Project is to

provide you with the opportunity to envision your financial future and to understand

and practice some important personal financial skills such as estimating income tax,

preparing a budget, learning about debt, and recognizing the importance of starting a

savings program as soon as possible. Working through the project will teach you

fundamental facts about personal finance that will help you make informed decisions

as you take charge of your own financial destiny.

According Romizan, M. to et al. (2021), the financial management behavior

and practices of Polytechnic Bagan Datuk (PBD) students are moderate and hopeful.

Some students were more inclined to spend money on needs than non-essentials.

Local Literatures

According to Barreto, R. B. et. al. (2019), budgeting has been part of the daily

lives of people. It exists anytime and anywhere, others have enough budget while
others do not. Expenses of people also differ based on their status in life. Students,

having their weekly allowance, experience some struggles in proper budgeting.

According to Doniego (2021), the study focused on the financial support

sources, parent vocations, and dwelling type of aspiring accountants at Cagayan

State University at Aparri. According to the statistics, parents are the most helpful,

with the majority of them being farmers, housewives, or company owners. Food,

transportation, and school-related expenditures are regularly deducted from students'

allowances. When they run out of money, they borrow, lie, cut corners, or work

longer hours.

As stated by R. N. S. Deloso. The goal of this study, according to et al. (2018-

2019), is to identify the most effective money management strategies among

students. Most students struggle with budgeting their allowances; some are better

than others. The primary purpose of this research is to assist students comprehend

the importance of budgeting approaches in their daily money management. This

research also allows parents to assist their children in budgeting whatever money

they grant them.

According to Rene N. S. D. et. al. (2019), this study aims to identify how

students manage their finances in a very effective way. Budgeting allowances is one

of the problems of most students; some tend to manage their allowances and some

do not.

On the source through Angeline L. L. et. al. (2022), this study assessed the

level of personal financial literacy of Kalinga State University Laboratory High School

students and aimed to determine student's finance opinions, decisions, practices,

and financial challenges. The study revealed a need for students to improve their

finance knowledge for the better. More than most students do not have savings

accounts, and less than half of them maintain very detailed financial records. Almost

the majority of the students experience running out of money before the next

allowance arrives.
As stated by Moneva, J. et. al. (2020), most of its most of the students receive

their allowance in a daily basis. The allowances are used for their everyday

consumptions and to be used for daily needs in school. The students appear to have

a peaceful thoughts of their financial lifestyles due to meeting financial duties with

much less level of debt. For the remaining money they have they can buy something

for their love ones and save money for future use.

According to Rios (2017), the Philippines' youth are compulsive spenders,

often not paying tuition or owning the latest technology. They often work part-time

jobs to pass time, but their financial stability often doesn't compensate for their

precarious circumstances. They often feel uneasy with their wealth and desire to

spend it quickly.

As stated by Mahdzan (2013), revealed a positive correlation between

an individuals’ financial literacy and savings as well as being influenced by an

individuals’ educational level.

According to Nick L. Aduana (2015), highlights that individuals who thrive in

personal life manage their finances effectively through careful financial planning

procedures, which include assessing one's financial situation, setting goals, creating

a budget, and monitoring and evaluating finances.

Farinella, J., et al (2017), if the student receives this information as a topic in

another course, their financial literacy does increase Furthermore, enrolling in a

money management course did not make students less inclined to stay debt-free. On

the other hand, students are more likely to stay out of debt if they study money

management in a different subject. Research suggests that money management

classes in high school are not teaching students anything useful.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses the operational plan of work. Number of activities in

the plan include the following operations: research design, sources of data,

participants of the study, sampling technique, research instrument, data gathering

procedure, and statistical treatment.

Research Design

The researcher will use a causal-comparative research design, which is a

research strategy that aims to determine the cause or the consequences of

difference that already exist between or among groups of individuals. This entry

discusses these differences, as well as the benefits, process, limitations, and

criticism of this type of research design. (Creswell, 2014). (Jongbo, 2014) attests that

it is employed when there are two groups which differ on independent variable and

the researcher wishes to investigate the difference of one or more dependent

variables or difference of one or more independent variables.

Furthermore, this is mixed method. Meanwhile, Mixed is a research method

that combines qualitative and quantitative method, involving philosophical

assumptions and data analysis, to enhance the overall strength of a study over

traditional methods (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2007). Using this method, the

researchers will analyze, interpret and conclude for the result of the study.

Sources of Data

Primary data will be obtained from the participants’ responses to the

interview, questionnaire, and survey form. The secondary data will be taken from

books, online journals, and reliable websites on the Internet.

Participants of the Study

The participants of the study will be 100 Senior High School students of Galilee

Academy in Rosario, Cavite, who budget their allowance and also to know how much

their daily allowance is.

Sampling Technique

The quota sampling technique will be used by the researchers to select

respondents. Quota sampling is a non-probability sampling method that relies on the

non-random selection of a predetermined number or proportion of units. This is called

a quota. (Nikolopoulou 2022). The quota sampling technique was selected by the

researchers because it selects a group of people who meet specific requirements.

Research Instrument

The researchers will create a questionnaires, interview, and survey

instruments to all Senior High School students in Galilee Academy to assess the

money management and serves as the main tool of gathering the data.

Data Gathering and Procedures

The researchers will create an interview-questionnaire that will be used to

collect the necessary answers from the respondents for this research. The

questionnaire is made up of the respondent's profile and statements that the

participants will answer. Following the formulation of questions, the researchers will

seek approval from their research teacher. Right after the approval. The researchers

will first introduce the topic to the respondents before they fill out the survey so that

they are aware of it. The participants in this study will be 100 Galilee Academy Senior

High School students. The researchers will select this group of respondents because

they are more relevant to the topic. The researchers will collect the data immediately

after conducting and answering all of the questionnaires. Because the researchers'

identities are irrelevant, they will ensure the confidentiality of their survey sheets. The

researchers will also recognize that people's consciousness may affect their honesty

and effectiveness in answering the survey, so the survey will be collected

immediately after. There will be no incentives for participants in the study.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The following statistical tests were applied to answer the specific problems

and hypothesis of the study.

Percentage is calculated by talking the frequency in the category divided by

the total number of participants and multiplying by 100%. Frequency and percentage

distribution were used to determine the demographic profile of the participants.

Formula:

f
%= × 100
n

Where:

% = percent

f = frequency

n = number of cases

Mean implies average and it is the sum of a set data divided by the amount of

data. Standard deviation is a statistic that measures the dispersion of data set

relative to its mean.

Formula:

x=
∑x
n

Where:

x = mean

∑ x = summation of x
n = total number of the population

Formula:

s=¿ ∑ ¿ ¿¿¿ ¿
√¿
Where:

s = standard deviation

∑ ¿ sum of …
n = total number of populations
