STUDENTS
RESEARCH PROBLEM
FINANCIAL BUDGETING IS ONE OF THE PROBLEMS OF THE STUDENTS AT TUYOM NATIONAL HIGH
SCHOOL, AND THIS PROBLEM IS AFFECTING THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF THE STUDENTS,
ESPECIALLY THE ABM STUDENTS.

PURPOSE STATEMENT
TO FIND OUT HOW OUR RESPONDENTS’ BUDGETING THEIR ALLOWANCE CAN AFFECT THEIR
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AND TO HELP THEM TO IMPROVE THEIR FINANCIAL BUDGETING.

Going to Senior High School is an important milestone for everyone, this is the stage where the
teenagers are growing more independent as they begin to make their major decision. And one of the
decision they make is to budget their allowance. Financial plays an important role in students’
academic performance. Nonetheless, effective allowance budgeting is regarded as important for
students because it will benefit them not only in sustaining their daily requirements or needs at
school, but also in assisting them in becoming more prepared in the proper handling of finances.
Being a senior high school student means you need to be responsible.One of these responsibilities is
managing their allowance (Kazmier, 2004). One of the challenges that every student faces is managing
the money their parents provide them. Many students are having a hard time in terms of budgeting
their allowances.Money as one of the main necessity plays a significant role in every student to
survive Senior High School (Babbie, 1997 ). Allowance is a necessity for every student (Micomonaco,
2003 ).Allowance budgeting is the process of calculating how much money you will earn during a
particular period of time, and planning how much you will spend, save, and borrow(Cambridge
Dictionary).

Due to this, several studies have examined the effects of budgeting student’s allowance to the
academic performances (Bestlink College of the Philippines Journal of Multidisciplinary Research) and
daily allowance and academic performance(Sollano, Duhaylongsod, Aviso, Moneva,2018).

According to a study funded by IJESC in 2018,budgeting students' allowance has a significant effect on
the students' academic performance. And to a new study led by Harvard, Princeton and Warwick
University scientists, a person's cognitive ability or a students' academic performance directly
influence by financial hardship. Academic performance is the measurement of student achievement
across various academic subjects(Ballotpedia).

Students, on the other hand, learn to save their allowance as they progress and fulfill various school
needs along with the things they wish to buy for themselves. Budgeting is one of the practical skills
that come in useful for them (Norvilitis, et al., 2006). It assists students in developing a better grasp of
financial issues that will become a burden in the future. The way students handle their money is
influenced by their daily needs, and it changes depending to a variety of reasons. Students have
daily personal needs, and we will understand how and where they spend their money through this
study. The more knowledge students have about their financial responsibility and status the less likely
they are to be in debt (Norvilitis, et al., 2006).

Students having a high financial status gain public attention and peaceful surroundings that would
improve their academic achievement (Chandra & Azimuddin, 2003). Researchers demonstrate that
financial status of the students correlates with academic achievement (Bhat, Joshi, & Wani 2016).
Bestlink College of the Philippines Journal of Multidisciplinary Research found that there were four
variables identified to be affected by allowance budgeting, such as transportation, food, projects, and
savings.Students currently have enough money to pay for not just all but some of their school
requirements. Their budget has already been calculated by the things they want to buy. Students'
academic performance improves as a condition of their allowance, but other students who are unable
to afford the requirements have the opportunity to enhance or improve their academic performance.

We lack the skills to budget and manage our allotment. One way to show to our parents that we are
trustworthy and capable of taking responsibility is to budget our allowance.In Tuyom National High
School, some of the senior high school students are mostly they are not living on a budget, others are
living with worrying their allowances running out because they don’t have enough to survive and the
worst case are those students who simply getting themselves into a cycle of debt by each other mean.
It is in this light that the purpose of this study is to determine whether budgeting their allowance can
affect the academic performance of ABM students.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The primary object of the study was to determine if budgeting students’ allowance can affect the
academic performance of ABM students at Tuyom National High School.

Specifically, this study will seek to answer the following questions:


1. What is the profile of the students in terms of:
1.1 Age
1.2 Gender
1.3 Year level
1.4 Class schedule
1.5 No. of class days per week
1.6 Allowance
2.What are the personal budgeting practices of business students as to:
2.1 Transportation
2.2 Food
2.3 Luxury and Leisure
2.4 Projects and Books
2.5 Communication
2.6 Savings
3. Do the students live by their own budget?
4. 4. Is there a significant relationship between the students allowance on their academic
performance?
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study will be able to contribute research-based data and knowledge on the possible effects of
budgeting students’ allowance to the academic performance of ABM students at Tuyom NHS.
Furthermore, the society in general can make informed decisions that are relevant to this area.

More specifically, this study shall be beneficial to the various groups of people.

The Students. This study may assist students in assessing their budgeting and spending practices.
Students will also benefit with knowledge on school allowance and how it is managed. It will educate
students that school allowance can be an encouragement for them to stay focused on their studies.
This will enlighten them about where other students spend their money. In light of this information,
this study can teach them how to budget and spend their allowance properly.

The Teachers. This study may also help teachers in educating their students how to properly budget
and manage their allowance. Teachers will understand their students' school behavior and academic
performance. Teachers would be able to understand why students are sometimes committed to their
studies. Specifically, Mathematics teachers are most involved on this study since they teach more
about problem solving. Other teachers, on the other hand, can assist students in gaining a deeper
understanding of this topic.

The Parents/Guardians. Parents will modify the amount they provide to their child. Furthermore, the
data provided will give them knowledge on the significance of school allowance in relation to the
determination of the students and their academic performance. This study may assist
parents/guardians by giving insights and information on the allowance they give to their children, as
well as how and where they normally spend it. This study can enlighten them about how much
allowance is appropriate for their children to use for academic needs.

School and School Administrator . They will understand their learners' actions within the school as
well as their performance in their particular subjects. They will also understand why their students
perform poorly in school because of financial problem.

To the Researches, we, the researcher, the study itself is significant to us,we will gain from an idea in
order to perform well in school; we will learn about self-determination and managing or
budgeting school allowance. The data acquired also provides insight into the significance of money
budgeting in education to students' motivation and academic performance.Not only, it is required for
us to conduct but also it give us the awareness and a chance to inform the users of the research, on
how the variable; Meal,Transportation, Other Expenses, and Projects affect the students on our
allowance budgeting practices. Also, it enhances the students’ awareness as to the importance of
planning a budget. They say the key is financial success is to be well aware of how to spend your
money.

SCOPE AND DELIMATION


The study is a descriptive research focusing on the assessment of Grade 11 and 12 Accountancy and
Business Management students and the effects of students' allowance budgeting on their academic
performance.This research study is limited and will be conducted only at the Tuyom National High
School when our subject teacher allows us. The respondents of the study are the Grade-11 and 12
ABM students. The method of the researcher will use in collecting information will be through using a
questionnaire. This will be used to evaluate and estimate the amount of money they spend every day,
on what they spend their money on, and how that budgeting can affect their academic performance.
