Hypothesis Test:

Null Hypothesis: There is no significant difference in the amount of time spent on social

media between people under and over 25 years old.

Alternative Hypothesis: There is a significant difference in the amount of time spent on

social media between people under and over 25 years old.

Steps of the Hypothesis Test:

Formulate null and alternative hypotheses.

Choose an appropriate statistical test (e.g., two-sample t-test).

Calculate sample means and standard deviations for both groups.

Under 25 years old: n = 6, x̄ = 8.5, s = 2.5

Over 25 years old: n = 6, x̄ = 5.5, s = 1.5

Calculate the test statistic (t) using the formula:

t = (x̄ 1 - x̄ 2) / sqrt((s1^2 + s2^2) / (n1 + n2 - 2))

Example: t = 0.9375

Determine the critical region using a t-distribution table with df = n1 + n2 - 2 = 10.

Critical value for α = 0.05 is 1.78.

Compare the test statistic to the critical value.

Since 0.9375 < 1.78, fail to reject the null hypothesis.

Effect Size

The effect size can be calculated using Cohen's d, which measures the difference in means

divided by the pooled standard deviation. Using the sample means and standard deviations, we

calculate:

d = (x̄ 1 - x̄ 2) / (s_pooled)

= (8.5 - 5.5) / (sqrt(2.5^2 + 1.5^2))

= 3 / sqrt(3.25)

= 0.9375

Interpretation

The effect size suggests that there is a small but non-significant difference in social media usage

between people under and over 25 years old. However, due to the lack of statistical significance,

it is uncertain whether this difference exists in the population.
