“Supercomputer”

Name: Titan or OLCF-3

Date of Release: 2012
Location: Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Brief History: The first place in the ranking of the 500 most powerful supercomputers in
the world has recently been taken by Titan, a colossal machine commissioned in late
2012. It has surpassed fellow giant Sequoia in the measurements made by the 'Top 500'
project to assess which IT systems have the greatest capacity. Titan or OLCF-3 was a
supercomputer built by Cray at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for use in a variety of
science projects. Titan was an upgrade of Jaguar, a previous supercomputer at Oak
Ridge, that uses graphics processing units (GPUs) in addition to conventional central
processing units (CPUs). The Titan supercomputer runs on the Cray Linux Environment
operating system. The speed of this computer is 17.59 petaFLOPS to 27 petaFLOPS
theoretical peak. The supercomputer mainly used in engineering, scientific, space
engineering, human health, energy, and many more.
