Job Title: Junior Grade

Department / Ward: Emergency Department

Base: Trafford

1.0 INTRODUCTION

The Trafford Urgent Care is based is based at Trafford General Hospital providing
Services to the population of Trafford and its neighbouring districts with a catchment
area of approximately 100,000.

The Urgent Care Centre currently sees around 30,000 attendances a year.

Objectives for the Post

The post is designed for a Middle Grade in Emergency Medicine

The objectives of the post are:

 To provide junior clinician cover to the Urgent Care Centre.


 Supervision of ENP’s in UCC.
 Manage patient flow along with nurse in charge in UCC.

2.0 JOB DETAILS

Title Junior Grade – Urgent Care Centre

Clinical Responsibilities

The post holder will wok alongside the other doctors on the junior grade rota. The JG’s main
responsibilities will be to provide clinical assessment and management of their own patients
under the supervision of the senior team.

Hours of work will be on a full shift rota, equivalent to a maximum of 40 hours a week and 1
in 3 weekends.

3.0 THE URGENT CARE DEPARTMENT


The Urgent Care Centre is managed by the urgent Care DIRECTORATE based at
Wythenshawe. One of the senior management team are based at Trafford during the
working week. This consists of a Senior Registrar, Juniors doctors, ENPs, and an Urgent
Care Matron.

Waiting areas –
There are two separate waiting areas, one for adults and one for children.

Reception and Triage


There is a Triage Nurse and Receptionist on duty 12-hours per day. We use the Manchester
National Triage guidelines and this process is computerised.

Clinical area –

This consists of:

Major examination rooms/cubicles


Minor areas consisting of 2 beds
Mental Health Room
136 Suite
Paediatric area

Office Space
The office space associated with this post will be a shared office in the Urgent Care.
Computer access is provided, allowing email, internet and diary management.

Teaching
The hospital is designed as a Teaching Hospital by University of Manchester, which
comprises one of the three main teaching hospital units for medical students from University.
It has recently launched its multi-disciplinary Health Academy encompassing education for
all health professionals. The Emergency Department has two firms of 3rd year medical
students (each shared with a medical Consultant) at any one time. There are also 4 th and 5th
year students on placements. The medical curriculum in Manchester is based on problem-
based learning. The consultants are involved in this and some tutor problem-based learning
groups.
The Directorate also has commitment to training other health providers such as Paramedics,
Fireman, ODA’s etc. It is expected that the Speciality Doctors will take a full part in the
educational activities of the department.
The hospital has an Education and Research Centre forming the focus for the Academy. It
contains; two large lecture theatres, various seminar rooms and a new library with facilities.
All of the Consultants have interest in teaching and staff training and are actively involved in
teaching on ATLS, ALS, APLS, Medic ALS, PHEC and MIMMS courses.

Research and Audit


Multiple research projects are ongoing and the department has a good publications record.
The main area’s of research interest rest in the Emergency Preparedness and pre-hospital
care. The appointee would be expected to take an active role in audit and engage with any
departmental research projects. The capacity to develop a formal academic interest may be
accommodated by discussion with the Research Lead for the Directorate.

Information Technology
The Emergency Department has a computerised system which has been developed in
house. This contains a real-time management system and computerised triage.

4.0 HOSPITAL

The Urgent Care Centre is situated in the at the front of Trafford General Hospital. The
Hospital is part of MFT, one of the largest Trusts in the region which includes, Wythenshawe
Hospital, MRI, The Manchester Royal Eye Hospital and Manchester Childrens Hospital.

5.0 TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE

The terms and conditions of the employment offered are set out in the Terms and Conditions
of Service of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff.

6.0 CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT


Registration
The post holder is required to hold current Registration with the General Medical Council.

Medical Screening
Appointment is subject to a satisfactory medical examination.

Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation


The post holder will be required to demonstrate their ability to perform cardiopulmonary
resuscitation and undergo further training in this area if deemed necessary.

Ionising Radiation Protection


All medical staff employed by, or working within, University Hospital South Manchester NHS
Foundation Trust is required to hold a valid ionising Radiation Protection Certificate. Regular
courses are held at which any member of staff not holding a current certificate may attend,
further details of which are available from the Medical Personnel Department.

7.0 OTHER SPECIALITIES

Removal Expenses
The trust operates a removal expenses policy, full details of which are available, along with
applications forms, from the Medical Personnel Department. All applications must be
submitted to the Medical Personnel Department for approval.

Car Parking
On site parking is restricted to permit holders only. Permits can be obtained from Hotel
Services at Trafford Hospital at the cost of £30 per month together with a £10 deposit (at the
time of writing). The deposit is refundable on return of the permit.

Banking Facilities
A branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland is located on site, which houses a cash dispenser
for account holders of various other banks.

Catering Facilities
In addition to the main dining room, smaller cafes are situated don site. There are various
vending machines around the hospital.

Shopping Facilities
There are two shops, located in the Maternity Department and near the Tower Block. In
addition, there are various local shops within close proximity of the hospital and Manchester
City Centre is approximately 8 miles away.
