CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has dramatically altered the
Philippines' higher education system, with a distinct shift in online instruction in an effort to
limit further virus transmission. COVID-19 has become a global health emergency. To prevent
the spread of COVID-19, the government has decided to use quarantine protocols and
temporarily close some schools and other educational institutions. As a result, millions of
students in our country have been adversely affected. That is why online classes were
implemented to allow students to continue learning even if they were only at home. To meet the
needs of students, the country has implemented proactive policies to ensure the continuation of
education. Modified forms of online learning activities are included in these policies. Online
learning can take the form of synchronous and time-based outcomes assessments, as well as
asynchronous, delayed time activities such as pre-recorded video lectures and time-independent
assessments (Oztok et al.,2013). As in-person classes remain suspended owing to the threat of
modes of learning. Felder and Brent (2005) discovered in a global setting that their student
respondents' poor test performance is influenced by their learning styles, which are unfortunately
incompatible with their teachers' modes of teaching. This is compounded by their dropping out
Nowadays, a significant number of students use a different learning style to help themselves
improve the way they learn and enabling students excel in their classes, which generally results them
being honor students. It is assumed that honor students have potentials to excel in their professional
lives in the future. Of course, each student has a different approach to learning, according to
research, a single technique or approach was unable to create optimal learning circumstances for
everybody. Identifying students' learning styles gives information about their individual preferences.
Understanding learning styles can aid in the creation, modification, and development of more
efficient curriculum and educational programs (Nursen İlçin, 2018). As a result, this study will be
great help to students who are struggling with learning as well as students who want to excel using
This study aims to determine what honor students most used learning method to the new
normal education system and how these methods affect the academic performance of grade 11
honor students in STI College Sta. Maria. Specifically, the study sought to answer the following
research questions:
1. What is the most used learning style that honor students do? This will be the following
learning styles:
1.1 Collaborative
1.2 Avoidant
1.3 Participant
1.4 Dependent
1.5 Independent
2. How does do honor students' learning styles influence their academic performance?
3. What is the most effective learning style based on the study's findings?
4. How does honor students manage their academic achievement when their learning styles
6. Is there a relationship between honor students' learning styles and their academic
performance?
Research Hypotheses
In this study, the following hypotheses were formulated to determined which hypotheses
academic performance in STI College Sta. Maria over the past course of the semester.
HA: There is a significant relationship between grade 11 honor students' learning styles and
academic performance in STI College Sta. Maria over the past course of the semester.
Sampling Method
The researcher's probability will use simple random sampling. The most basic sampling
technique is simple random sampling, which involves selecting a group of participants (a sample)
for research from a larger group (a population). A method of selecting a sample in which all
members of the population have an equal chance of being chosen as respondents. Each individual
is chosen entirely by chance and each member of the population has an equal chance of being
included in the sample (Easton, 2020). This method is the simplest of all the probability sampling
methods because it only takes a single random selection and little prior knowledge about the
manner.
