Problem 1: (5+2)
A sociologist surveys 250 randomly selected citizens in each of two countries to compare the
mean number of hours of volunteer work done by adults in each. Among the 250 inhabitants of
Lilliput, the mean hours of volunteer work per year was 32, with standard deviation 11.8. Among
the 250 inhabitants of Blefuscu, the mean number of hours of volunteer work per year was 29,
with standard deviation 7.2.
a) Test, at the 2.5% level of significance, the claim that the mean number of hours
volunteered by all residents of Lilliput is more than the mean number of hours
volunteered by all residents of Blefuscu.
b) Develop a 95% confidence interval for µ1 - µ2, and interpret the interval.
Problem 2: (6)
The table below shows scores on a vocabulary test before using a new study guide and tests on a
similar vocabulary test after using the study guide for a random sample of 10 students.

Perform an appropriate hypothesis test at 5 % level of significance to conclude about

effectiveness of study guide.

Problem 3: (6)

A car manufacturer aims to improve the quality of the products by reducing the defects and also
increase the customer satisfaction. Therefore, he monitors the efficiency of two assembly lines in
the shop floor. In line A there are 18 defects reported out of 200 samples. While the line B shows
25 defects out of 600 cars. At α 5%, is the differences between two assembly procedures are
significant in terms of defective proportions?

Problem 4: (6)
Is gender independent of education level? A random sample of 395 people was surveyed and
each person was asked to report the highest education level they obtained. The data that resulted
from the survey is summarized in the following table:

High School Bachelors Masters PhD. Total

Female 60 54 46 41 201

Male 40 44 53 57 194

Total 100 98 99 98 395

Are gender and education level dependent at 5% level of significance? In other words, given the
data collected above, is there any association between the gender of an individual and the level
of education that he/she has obtained?

Good Luck
