BARRICADES AND WARNING DEVICES

INTRODUCTION
Safety planning calls for first things first. The first step in construction is the planning of traffic flow
through or around the work areas. Many sources of injuries involving the public and the workers during
Highway Construction are:
1. Collision with construction equipment
2. Pedestrians falling into open excavation work
3. Driving into open excavation work
4. Driving into work areas
5. Entering danger zones such as the swing area of a crane or track hoe.

WHY?
To prevent injury: To those who are unaware construction sites can be very hazardous, with
excavations, plant, equipment, material storage and the presence of chemicals.
To prevent prosecution: The provision of inadequate security arrangements for authorised or
unauthorised visitors to site can lead to prosecution. Sometimes site operations have been stopped until
such facilities are put properly in place – this resulting in delays to projects or an increase in overtime
working to make good lost time.

DO
 Use barricades and other warning devices to
reduce the chances of such accidents.
 Use fence barricade as a roadblock and
around heavy equipment.
 Equip barricades with lights for night visibility.
 Use signs – they should conform in shape,
size and colour to the recommended
specifications.
 Use signs freely to designate work operations,
approach to the operation, warnings, speed
limits,
 Use flagman for controlling the safe flow of
traffic.
 Flagman must be visible to traffic at all times.
High visibility vests should be worn.
DON’T
DON’T allow flagman to incorrectly use the traffic
control devices
DON’T allow flagman to position themselves in the
traffic lane – they should stand on the shoulder
opposite the roadblock or in the blocked lane, and
should face traffic at all times.
DON’T allow unauthorised persons on to a site.
DON’T leave keys in the ignition of site vehicles and
equipment when unattended.
DON’T put yourself at risk of being accused of
assault, have someone accompany you if you are to
challenge an unauthorised person who is present on
site.
DON’T move a barricade unless necessary and
remember to replace it when finished with your
work. If you see a problem with a barricade, light or
sign, fix it or report it to your supervisor.
Remember…Safety is first - Remember, Barricades,
Signs and Lights are important to the safety of the
traveling public through the job site.
