The vocational aim is also known as “the utilitarian aim or the bread and butter aim.” The
above stated ideals of education are useless unless these aims enable us to procure the
primary needs of our life- food, shelter and clothing. Education must help the child to earn his
livelihood. Education, therefore, must prepare the child for some future profession or
vacation or trade. The vocational aim is a narrow aim of education. Therefore, the vocational
aim is not a complete aim by itself.
Educationists who hold the knowledge or information aim of education justify their stand
with powerful arguments. They argue that knowledge is indispensable for all right action and
it is the source of all power. “It is knowledge which makes a realist a visionary successful in
any profession.
OBJECTIVES OF EDUCATION
1. Provide the desired direction to educational activities.
2. Determine the nature of educational activities.
3. Provide a basis for systematizing or planning an educational programme.
4. Decide the points of emphasis in an educational activity.
5. Give unity and coherence to an educational programme.
6. Provide the basis for the measurement of growth and thus guarantee valid evaluation.
7. Help distinguish between various aspects of learning.
8. Help focus attention on proper attributes of teaching and evaluation.
9. Help grade learning experiences and also evaluation material.
10. Help maintain a balance between different aspects of an educational programme.
11. Help fix priorities in an educational programme.
12. Guide educational decisions in curricular and co-curricular areas.
13. Guide in the selection of relevant content.
14. Guide improvements in education.
15. Give meaning to and clarify the structure and content of curriculum.
16. Help make learning functional.
17. Help particular learning in various fields.
18. Help discover or evolve proper learning situations.
19. Help define educational process.
20. Help make the intangibles in education tangible.
21. Help identify weakness and strengths of pupils in learning.
22. Facilitate communication among educational workers.
