Worksheet 1

Identifying the needs: Assess the potential of your project titles by filling out the worksheet below.
What is the engineering challenge that justifies the need for this project?
Waste disposal is one of the world's challenges. It doesn't concern only the world; so does the
engineering. The goal of this research is to minimize waste and promote a clean, far-from-disease
environment. And also, this research aims to promote the three R's (reuse, reduce, and recycle).
What is the target research area, research topic, and UN SDG this project aims to target?

 Key research area: Technological development

 Research topic: Development in waste disposal
 UN SDG: Sustainable cities and communities, or climate action

Describe the target population – who specifically experiences this problem or need?
The world is in need of devices that could reduce garbage. But this is mostly applicable to landfills
where garbage is dumped and not taken care of or thrown into the ocean.
How is this project unique? For example, is it like other projects but designed for a different population? Does it
employ a new approach?

 Uses material-specific process, as this device makes biodegradables into compost and non-
biodegradable into recyclable or reusable material
 Uses solar energy to operate and work
 Environment friendly
 Durable and Ergonomic
 Safe and Energy efficient
 Achievable
What are the requirements?

 The device has to fulfill an automation role in segregating and disposing of waste materials.
 The device has to perform solely without human intervention or control.
 Can be simple to operate.
 Can easily be accessed by the community.
 Can achieve a practical role in the field of waste disposal.
 The dimensions are to match the average garbage bins.
 Affordability.
What are the constraints?
Production/Building, Budget/Money, Time and Materials
