Module V
19. a) A liter of hard water sample consists of the following composition, CaSO4 = 8 (4)
ppm, MgCl2 = 6 ppm, and Ca(HCO3)2 = 4 ppm. Calculate the total hardness of
water. (Given that atomic mass of Ca = 40 u, Mg = 24 u, Cl = 35.5 u, S = 32 u,
O = 16 u, C = 12 u, H = 1 u).
b) Illustrate with a suitable graph that break point of chlorination consists of four (10)
different stages.
20. a) 0.90 gm of CaCO3 was dissolved in HCl and the solution made up to 1 litre with (8)
distilled water. 50 ml of this standard solution required 50 ml of EDTA solution
for titration. 50 ml hard water sample required 18 ml of EDTA and after boiling
and filtering required 10 ml EDTA solution. Calculate each type of hardness of
water.
b) Explain anion exchange process and its regeneration with equations. (6)
