COMPANY STRUCTURES
Most companies are made up of three groups of people: the shareholders (акционеры) (who provide
(которые предоставляют капитал компании) the capital), the management (responsible for managing the
company) (администрация / правление) and the workforce (работники). The management structure
(управленческая структура типовой компании) of a typical company is shown in this organization chart
- The Boards of Directors
- Managing Director (MD) (управляющий, директор-распорядитель)
- Senior management (управляющий высшего звена, возглавляет отделы, принимает решения) /
company officers
- Middle management (управляющий среднего звена, возглавляет подразделения)
At the top of the company hierarchy is the Board of Directors, headed by the Chairperson (председатель)
(Chairman) and, in American companies, President. The board is responsible for policy decisions and
It will usually appoint a Managing Director (директора-распорядителя) or Chief Executive
Officer, who has overall (несёт полновесную ответственность) responsibility for the running of the
business. Senior managers or company officers (управляющие высшего звена) head the various
departments or functions (отделы/подразделения) within the company, which may include the following:
- Marketing - маркетинг, отдел маркетинга;
- Public Relations (PR) - отдел связей с общественностью;
- Information Technology or IT - отдел информационной технологии;
- ‘Person,nel or Human Resources (HR) - отдел работы с персоналом;

RECRUITMENT
When a company needs to recruit or employ new people, it may decide to advertise the job or position in
the media. People who are interested can then apply for the job by sending in a letter of application
(covering letter, cover letter, motivation letter) and a curriculum vitae [kəˌrɪkjələm ˈviːtaɪ] (CV, résumé)
containing details of their education and experience. A company may also ask candidates to complete a
standard application form. The company’s Human Resources department will then select the most suitable
applications and prepare a short list of candidates or applicants, who are invited to attend an interview.
Another way for a company to hire (take on) is by using the services of a recruitment agency (AmE search
firm) who will provide them with a list of suitable candidates.

RECURRENT PATTERNS IN SOCIALIZING
What are the recurrent patterns and how are they to be taught? The simplest is the underlying pattern for
Identification / Introducing yourself. It consists of Name + relevant information, for example:
Hello, I’m David Spencer from Texaco.
Hello, I’m Helen Hart, I’m in charge of accounting.
Introducing other people follows the same pattern Name + relevant information + a phrase of politeness:
I’d like you to meet Claude, a colleague of mine from France.
I want you to meet John Benny. He’s with the Chicago Consulting Group.
Daily greetings also require a pattern. It is either Greeting + follow-up inquiry + reply (General), for
example:
Hello. How are you?
Very well, thanks.
Good morning. How are things?
Not too bad.
Good afternoon. Is everything okay?
Fine, thank you.
Or Greeting + specific inquiry + reply as in:
Hello. How was your holiday?
Very good.
How was your trip?
Very interesting.
Good morning. How did the meeting go?
Very well/fine.
How did you enjoy the film?
Very much.
Ending a conversation requires an indication of one’s intent to conclude the conversation. The
appropriate pattern in as follows: Indicating your intent + explanation as in:
I really must be going. They are calling my flight.
I really should be getting back to my hotel. It’s getting very late and I’ve got an early morning flight.
Saying goodbye also presupposes a pattern: Saying goodbye + comment as in:
Goodbye. I’ll look forward to seeing you when you’re next in London.
Goodbye. I hope the meeting goes well.
Goodbye. Thank you for all your help.
Variation of style should be taken into account: some utterances are neutral, others are formal or
informal. Here are some informal ways to say goodbye:
Bye. See you soon.
Bye. See you later. Thanks for everything.
20 of 61
The pattern for Accepting invitations is Thanking + accepting, for example:
neutral: - Thank you very much. That would be very nice.
That’s very kind of you. I’d like that very much.
Thank you for inviting me. I’d love to come.
informal: - Thanks. That’s a good idea / what a good idea / that sounds fun.
There is a pattern for Declining invitations as well: Thanking + declining + reason. Here come several
illustrations:
- Thank you for inviting me, but I’m afraid I can’t come. I’ve already arranged something else.
- Thank you very much, but unfortunately I won’t be here tomorrow.
It is also useful to learn the patterns for Thanking people for hospitality, Accepting and declining offers,
Making requests, Responding to requests (Ellis, O’Driscoll 1995). Valuable material can be found in English
Usage (Collins COBUILD, 1992) which is corpora-based and provides numerous specimens of real
English with clear guidance as to the key functions in English conversation: Addressing people, Questions,
Invitations, etc.

HOW TO KEEP THE CONVERSATION FLOWING?
One of the rules of effective socializing is to keep the conversation flowing. There are various
conversational techniques that are of practical significance for a foreign language learner. Through
internalizing recurrent patterns students become proficient in maintaining a conversation in English.
Questions and answers are core elements of natural conversations. Here are several typical question-answer
patterns:
1) question — single statement answer
Will they mind if I smoke? Yes, I think they will.
2) question — multiple statement answer
Did anybody ring while I was out? Yes. There was a call actually. I’ve left the message on your desk.
3) question deduced from an answer (делать вывод)
I hate all this traveling on business, don’t you? Yes and no — I like seeing different countries.
4) question — answer + question
What do you do when you’re not working? Golf — I’m a fanatic! Four rounds most weekends. What
about you?
Question — answer + information/comment
Is this your first visit to Hong Kong? No. I was here on business a year ago.
Comments and additional information build up the conversation. Their presence transforms a mere
question-answer exchange into a truly meaningful sample of human communication.
The underlying mechanism of making a conversation in a business setting is demonstrated convincingly
in Making contact, Telephoning, and Socializing (Longman Business English Skills): every conversation is
accompanied by a blueprint reflecting the flow of questions, answers and comments. Here comes a typical
blueprint (схематичное изображение) for an extended conversation between two businessmen:
- Asks a general question about ...
- Answers. Adds a comment.
- Reacts. Adds information.
- Makes a comment. Asks another question.
- Answers. Adds information.
- Reacts. Adds information.
- Asks a general question about ...
- Answers. Adds information. Makes a comment.
- Reacts. Adds information.
Briefly: there are several typical question-answer patterns: question-single statement answer, question-
multiple statement answer, question deduced from an swear, question-answer + question, question-answer +

SETTING UP AND GROWING A BUSINESS
Initial idea
Someone has an idea for a new business (a 'start-up' (новое предприятие (начинающее
Maybe they spot a gap in the market, or maybe they have an idea that is similar to existing
offers, but with a competitive edge. Potential sources of finance for this new business include self-funding,
backers [ˈbækə] such as friends and family members, a bank [bænk] loan, and a venture capital firm.
A bank will want some sort of security (securities) in case the loan is not repaid, and sometimes the
person's house is offered as collateral [kəˈlætərəl] (обеспечение). The fourth option, venture capital (VC),
is attractive for businesses with a high profit potential in the medium term (long / short term), but high
start-up costs. A VC company (ventury capital company, читать полностью) will offer funds (понятие во
мн ч) and take on the risk of the business failing, but in exchange will want a large number of shares. They
aim to sell these later, when the business goes public (going public / private).
in the medium term (+ in the long term, in the short term) - среднесрочная перспектива
When financing is in place, the business is registered as a legal entity: sole ‘trader, partnership,
limited company, etc. See unit 5.

Early months and ‘growth phase
Now the business can start trading. The risk of failure in the first two years is very high. Often the
problem isn't sales, but ‘cash flow: the company has to wait for its invoices [ˈɪnvɔɪs] to be paid, and
meanwhile the debts are piling up. The bank will only extend its line of credit up to a point.
But hopefully the business achieves a critical mass of customers, and establishes itself in the
marketplace. It enters a ‘growth phase. This early growth tends to be organic — turnover increases, the
company employs more staff [stɑːf], it develops a supply network, etc. The majority of small companies
(medium-sized, big) just continue in this way - growing or shrinking year by year depending on their
managerial [ˌmænəˈdʒɪəriəl] skills and general market conditions.
Selling the business
However, there are other possibilities. The founder of the business may decide to sell the business as a
going concern. They might sell to a competitor, or to a company wanting to expand into that market

business, founder, going concern, competitor, company, expansion, market, buyer, acquisition, a strategy
of acquisition, takeover, a strategy of takeovers, a strategy of organic growth.
IPO
Another possibility is that the founders may decide to go public (= float/list on the stock exchange).
Here, they sell their original privately-held shares at an IPO (initial public offering). This brings in a huge
amount of money, some going directly to the owners as reward for their hard work, the rest going back into
the business as reinvestment.
IPO, founder, going public, flotation, listed/quoted company, the stock exchange, share, IPO, (initial
public offering), money, owner, business, reinvestment
IPO, это транскрипция/транслитерация;

36 Your background and career
I enjoyed high school - my grades were good and I got involved in a lot of extracurricular activities. At
the age of eighteen I went to university (AmE college / university). I got a place at the university in my home
town, although some of my friends moved away to other universities and lived on campus. At first I hated it,
and I nearly dropped out after a few months. But after a while I made friends and got used to writing all the
essays (AmE papers). Money was a problem - I had no grant or other financial aid and I worked my way
through college by doing a little part-time work whenever I could.
My degree was in economics, and my main subject (AmE major) was international trade. The lecturers
(AmE professors) were good and I enjoyed the course (AmE program) very much. I spent the middle year of
the course working as an intern in a bank — that was really useful. It was the only part where I got some real
vocational training. At the end of the course I thought about staying on to do a Masters, but I decided that the
life of a postgraduate didn't really interest me. It was time to enter the world of work.
After graduating, it took me several months to find a job. I was short-listed for a few jobs, but they never
called me back for a second interview. Eventually I was offered a junior position in the international
department of a bank. Because of my internship (work placement) I knew more or less what to expect in
terms of the working environment. I spent five years there, learning the business and was promoted to Senior
Analyst in my late twenties.
That time in my life was really hectic — I was living the life of typical young, single person in the
financial services sector. I worked hard and partied hard. I often stayed at the office until eight in the
evening, and was exhausted at the weekends, By the age of thirty I was burnt out. I needed some personal
space to decide where my life was going, and I decided to take a off. I gave in my notice and quit my job.
I had saved up quite a lot of money from the job in the bank and so I was able to go travelling. I
backpacked my way around India and South-East Asia and had some crazy times. But I knew that I had to
settle down one day, and I wanted to start a family. So I came home and started to look for work again.
I registered with some online employment agencies, and they found a vacancy almost immediately. It was
in a similar field as before, but less high-pressure.

My salary was increasing year by year and so I bought an apartment.
While I was working as a sales assistant, another company invited me to join them.

I had already quit my job when they announced the job cuts.

FRANCHISING
Franchising [ˈfræntʃaɪz] is a business system in which a company (or franchisor [ˈfræntʃaɪzə]) sells an
individual (or franchisee [ˌfræntʃaɪˈziː]) the right to operate a business using the franchisor's established
system or format.
As part of the franchise agreement the franchisee pays an initial sum of money, a franchise fee or front
end fee, to the franchisor and agrees to pay a royalty or management services fee for continuing advice and
assistance, which is usually calculated as a percentage of annual turnover. The franchisee may also pay an
advertising fee to contribute to the franchisor's annual advertising and marketing costs. The franchisee also
has to find the necessary capital to open the business.
The franchisor provides an operations manual which contains all the information that the franchisee
needs to run his or her business. A franchisor may appoint a master franchisee to supervise the business in a
particular area.

RETAILING
Retailing is the business of selling products to the general public. Most retailers sell from shops or
stores which are called outlets [ˈaʊtlet]. Many countries have large retail chains which are organised
nationally and sell a standardised [ˈstændədaɪz] selection of products. Their outlets are often in shopping
centres (US malls), where there is a large variety of stores in the same location.
Many large retailers operate from out of town locations with parking facilities, known as either
hypermarkets [ˈhaɪpəˌmɑːkɪt] (over 30,000 square metres) or superstores [ˈsuːpəstɔː] (under 30,000 square
metres). They may be on a retail park, where there are a number of large stores.
Department stores such as Harrods in London are large shops which sell a wide variety of products,
usually from a city centre location. As the name suggests, they are organised in departments, each with its
own manager.
