Social Science (Geography) - The Earth Our Habitat

Chapter 1 – The Earth in the Solar System

Very Short Answer Questions: 1 Mark

1. Fill in the blanks-

(i) All the planets move around the sun in a/an________.

Ans: Elongated path - The solar system's eight planets follow a set route around the
sun. These are elongated pathways. They're also called orbits.

(ii) North direction can be guessed with the help of ________ star.
Ans: Pole - As it is constantly visible in the northern horizon, the pole star aids in
direction finding. This, as viewed from the north, depicts the direction to the north.

(iii) Between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter _________ are found.
Ans: Asteroids - Asteroids are stony asteroids that circle the Sun. Although asteroids
orbit the Sun in the same way as planets, they are much smaller.

(iv) when stars form a various pattern it is called as __________.

Ans: Constellations - A constellation, such as Orion the Great Hunter, Leo the Lion,
or Taurus the Bull, is a group of stars that appear to create a pattern or picture.

2. State true and false.

(i) System of stars is called as Universe.

Ans: False - A galaxy is a large cluster of stars. A galaxy is made up of billions of
stars, clouds, and gases, and a universe is made up of millions of galaxies.

(ii) Jupiter is the biggest planet in our solar system.

Ans: True - Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and the largest planet in the solar
system, with a mass more than twice that of all the other planets combined.

(iii) Earth is our home planet.

Ans: True – Earth is our home planet. Earth, the third planet from the sun, is the
only place in the known cosmos where life has been confirmed.

(iv) Sun is a satellite.

Ans: False - The Sun is a celestial body. There are many stars, but the Sun is the one
that is closest to Earth. Our solar system revolves around it.

3. Match the following:-

i. Jupiter Farthest Planet

ii. Moon Dwarf Planet

iii. Pluto Biggest planet

Iv. Neptune A satellite

Ans:
a) Biggest Planet - Jupiter is our solar system's second-most intense gravitational
influence, after the Sun. Its mass is so great that it cleared material from the inner
Solar System, preventing the formation of a super-Earth.

b) A satellite – As it lacks the size and gravitational pull of a planet, the moon is
merely a satellite object that is neither a star nor a planet.

c) Dwarf Planet - Pluto is a dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, a region beyond
Neptune that is home to frozen bodies and other minor planets.
d) Farthest Planet - Neptune is the most distant planet in the Solar System, orbiting
the Sun at a distance of 4.498 billion kilometres (2.794 billion miles).

4. Choose the correct option
(i) “Earth-Twin” is called as_________.

a) Jupiter

b) Saturn

c) Venus

d) None of the above

Ans: Venus – Due to their similar size, mass, density, composition, and gravity,
Venus and Earth are often referred to as twins. With a mass of around 80% that of
Earth, Venus is only a smidgeon smaller than our own planet.

(ii) The third nearest planet to sun is_________.

a) Venus
b) Mercury

c) Earth
d) None of the above
Ans: Earth - Mercury is the nearest planet to the Sun. Then there's Venus, which is
the second closest planet to the Sun, and Earth, which is the third closest planet to
the Sun.

5. Define the Following

(i) Dwarf Planet

Ans: Dwarf planets are those that do not meet any of the criteria for being classified
as planets.

(ii) Planets
Ans: Planets are bodies that do not have their own light or heat.

Short Answer Questions 2 Marks
6. Why we do not see the moon in the day?
Ans: The intense light of the sun prevents us from seeing the moon throughout the
day.

7. Why is Milky Way called as Akash Ganga.

Ans: The Milky Way is also known as Akash Ganga because ancient Indians thought
of it as a river of scattered light in the sky.

8. Name any one constellation.

Ans: Saptarishi is a constellation that may be seen in the Northern Hemisphere.

9. How many days does the moon take to complete one spin on its axis?
Ans: One rotation of the Moon on its axis takes about 27 days.

10. Which are planets that have rings around them?

Ans: Rings around Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus.

Short Answer Question 3 Marks

11. Explain Moon.

Ans: A satellite is the Moon. There is just one moon on Earth, however some planets
have multiple moons. The moon is only one-quarter the size of the Earth. Because
the moon is so close to the earth in comparison to the other celestial bodies, it appears
to be incredibly large. The moon is 3, 84,400 kilometres away from Earth.

12. Explain about the closest and third closest planet to the sun.
Ans: The third closest planet to the sun is Earth. There are eight planets in the solar
system, each of which orbits the sun in its own elongated orbit. Mercury is the planet
that is nearest to the sun. Then comes Venus, and finally the Earth. Earth is the planet
that is third from the sun.

13. What are planets? Explain.

Ans: Planets lack their own light and heat sources. Planets are celestial bodies that
do not have their own heat and light. The light from the stars is used to illuminate
these planets. Planet comes from the Greek term Planetai, which meaning wanderer.

14. What is Constellation?

Ans: A constellation is a group of stars that form distinct patterns. Different groups
of stars make a variety of patterns in the night sky. Constellations are the names
given to these groups. The constellations Saptarishi, or the small bear, and Ursa
Major, or the big bear, are well-known.

15. Where are the Asteroids found?

Ans: Between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, asteroids can be found. Asteroids are
small bodies that exist in our solar system. These tiny bodies, like the rest of the
solar system's celestial bodies, orbit the sun. These asteroids are thought to be
fragments of a shattered planet.

16. What are the differences between Planets and stars?
Ans: Stars are massive celestial objects. They are gaseous bodies that are extremely
hot. Stars have their own light sources and emit it. They have their own source of
warmth. Planets, on the other hand, are much smaller than stars. They lack their own

source of heat. They don't even have their own light source. The stars provide them
with illumination. Planets orbit the sun in a heliocentric orbit.

17. What do you mean by a solar system?

Ans: The solar family is another name for the solar system. At the heart of the family
is the sun, which serves as the head. The solar system is made up of the sun, eight
planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune), as well
as satellites, asteroids, and meteoroids. We dwell on the planet Earth. The qualities
of life can only be found on the planet Earth. Because the earth is in the right orbit
around the sun, it is neither too hot nor too cold.

18. Why is the earth a unique planet?

Ans: The only known planet in the solar system with suitable conditions for life is
Earth. The Earth's distance from the sun is about right, so it's neither too hot nor too
cold. Its temperature is ideal for life to thrive. The amount of water required for
survival on Earth is sufficient. Water makes up two-thirds of the earth's surface. It
also contains the gases that are required for life to exist, such as oxygen and carbon
dioxide. It is referred to as a one-of-a-kind planet for all of these reasons.

19. Why do we see only one side of the moon all the time?
Ans: The moon is the earth's natural satellite. It appears larger since it is closer to
the ground. The Moon is the closest celestial body to the Earth. The Moon takes
around 27 days to complete one orbit around the Earth. One rotation on its axis also
takes the same amount of time. We only see one side of the moon from the earth
because it takes the same amount of time to rotate around the planet and on its axis.

20. What do you mean by universe?

Ans: The universe is the greatest unit in which humans dwell. There are millions of
galaxies in the universe. The Milky Way galaxy is an example of such a galaxy in
the universe. The Milky Way galaxy includes our planet. This cosmos contains
everything that exists. There is only one universe. The size of the cosmos is a subject

of debate among scientists. They're on a mission to learn more about the universe.
Many asteroids, planets, dark matter, stars, and other objects can be found in the
universe.
