This is the end of my second week of my trip to Australia and here I am, spending a
few days at Ayers Rock, or Uluru as it is called by the Aborigines, near Alice Springs.
I took the train from Adelaide because I wanted to see as much of this huge country as
possible. It was a really long journey and a bit boring to be honest as there isn’t really
that much to see – just desert and a few plants here and there! I didn’t even see any
animals as most of them only come out when it starts to get dark. I guess it’s too hot for
them in the midday sun.
I’m camping here with a group of students. We’ve got a fantastic guide who knows so
much about the history and geography of this place. It’s absolutely boiling during the
daytime but freezing at night so it really is extreme. No one can remember the last time
there was heavy rain so you can imagine how careful everyone is with water.
Tomorrow we’re hiking round Ayers Rock. It doesn’t look that big on pictures but it’s
actually almost 10 kilometres! But I’ll manage, I’m sure. The colours are amazing … reds
and oranges and purples, so I’m really looking forward to taking some good photos.
James Brayne

Are the sentences True (T) or False (F)? If there isn’t enough information in the text,

2 The heat made travelling difficult for James during the day.
3 There is someone with James who can tell him a lot about the area.
4 James says that the area he’s in is extremely dry at the moment.
5 James thinks it will be too far to walk around Ayers Rock in a day.

The Larmer Tree Festival

The Larmer Tree Festival is a music festival that has taken place every July for the last 20 years. But it has
never grown in size so there are only 4,000 tickets available. It starts on the Wednesday of the middle week
in July and ends at the weekend, on the Sunday, so you can buy tickets for separate days or you can go for
the whole period.
The festival is named after an old tree that originally grew in big gardens which were opened to the public in
1880 as a place where people could go for rest and entertainment.
There are lots of bands every day, starting at lunchtime and going through until after midnight so festival
goers can spend their time listening to music from all over the world. But if they don’t want to do that, there
are plenty of quiet places to meet friends and sit and chat.
As well as music, there are also lots of activities for children as it is a family festival. There are jugglers and
face painters and lots of workshops to go to, from doing creative things to learning how to drum or dance.
Most people want to stay at the festival for the whole time so they camp. There is a large campsite next to
the Larmer Tree gardens that has a shop where you can buy food to cook. But if you can’t find what you
want there, there are also cafés and a lot of other different places to eat in the festival area – and lots of
places to buy souvenirs! There really is something for everyone!

Reading
11 Read these posts and the advice people are given.

a Alice I’m really tired all the time but I’ve got so much homework to do
for school.
When you’re tired, you should take a break for a few minutes. Can you go
outside for some fresh air? Do you have a dog you can take for a walk?
You’re probably not getting enough sleep either so you should try going
to bed earlier.

b Ben I’m really worried about my end-of-year exams because I have to pass
them all if I want to go to university.
I’m sure everyone feels the same but you have plenty of time so you
should start revising now. Don’t leave everything until the last minute.
Why don’t you write out a revision timetable and then get together with a
couple of friends and do some revision every day? That way you’ll be very
well prepared.

c Michael Yesterday I broke my mum’s favourite fruit bowl. But I still haven’t
said anything – I don’t know what to say!
She probably won’t be as cross as you think. And she’ll be pleased that
you told her. Maybe you could offer to buy a new one? It can’t be the
same as the other one, but it would be a nice thing to do.

d Lucy My parents were really angry with me yesterday because I didn’t tell
them I was going to a party.
Your parents were only angry with you because they were worried. You
really shouldn’t change your plans without telling them. I’m sure you have
a mobile phone so you should always call them to let them know where
you are and when you’ll be home. You should apologise and promise not
to do that again.

e Stuart I want to get into the football team but I’m not very fit.

If you’re really serious about getting into the team, you should start
training now. Why don’t you go to your local gym and ask to see one of
the trainers? They can organise a special programme for you. If you go to
the gym regularly, you’ll soon notice a difference.

f Emily I had an argument with my best friend yesterday and now she won’t
speak to me.
Have you tried to call her? If not, I would suggest doing that first. If she
doesn’t respond, you could go round to see her or, depending what you
argued about, why not send an email? I’m sure it won’t be long before
you’re best friends again.

Match the descriptions (1–5) with the people and their problems (a–f).
Which person
0 doesn’t want to admit what they’ve done wrong? c
1 upset their family because he / she failed to do something important?
2 may need to rest and relax a bit more?
3 needs to prepare for something by taking more exercise?

5 needs to begin preparation for something now?

What next for communication? by Jamie Rogers

The way people communicate has changed a lot over the last few years. So many people have
to check their Facebook page, Twitter account, emails or text messages every few minutes.
How often do you see people in the street not paying any attention to what is going on around
them? They are just busy ‘communicating’.
For many people, these technological developments are exciting. Science fiction becomes
science fact. What will the next big thing be? Imagine communicating with anyone, anywhere
in the world through your glasses or your watch – well, you can now. Although these latest
inventions are still expensive, they will become cheaper very soon.
On the other hand, this 24/7 communication might result in people spending more time alone,
in isolation. There may be no need to meet anyone face to face if you can listen to music,
upload video clips, and send and receive text messages and emails through your watch at any
time of the day or night.
Although there are, of course, many benefits to the communication systems we have now,
there is a danger that soon we will not be able to communicate in a real way. I hope that the
advances in technology stop before we all have a microchip and end up being robots!

a Melanie I’ve always been really scared of flying, although I know it’s a really safe way to travel.
I’m lucky because Mum and Dad understand how I feel. But my grandparents live
hundreds of miles away, and because I refuse to fly, we always have to travel by car or
train, which takes a really long time. But they never complain.

b Dan I think mine is a really stupid phobia as I’ve never actually seen a snake in the wild,
only in zoos. But for some reason I’m just terrified of them. I’ve always wanted to go
to the Amazon rainforests but there’s no way I’ll be able to do that until I can forget
my phobia – and that’s impossible.

c Ralph
I don’t know why, but I don’t really like being close to birds when they’re flying
around. It’s silly, I know, but I always think they’ll crash into me and hit me – which of
course they never do!

d Lisa
I’m frightened of the dark and always have to sleep with a light on somewhere. I think
it comes from when I was a child and my older brother watched horror movies in the
dark. And unfortunately I watched them too and then of course I couldn’t sleep.

e Adam I’ve only got one real phobia. I got stuck in a small lift once. It was at an underground
station so it was really busy, but no one there noticed that the lift wasn’t working. At
first everyone inside was quite calm but as time went on, people started to get a bit
nervous. In fact, I wasn’t in it for long – but now I’ll always use the stairs, just in case!

f Sally
I have a real fear of clowns. Luckily you don’t see many of them around so it’s not
something I have to worry about most of the time! It’s because I can’t see what they
really look like, I think.

Whose phobia
0 is about being near to certain creatures when they’re moving? c
1 means there is one place they can’t visit?
2 is about enclosed spaces?
3 doesn’t really affect their lives very much?
4 means it’s difficult for them to get anywhere far from home?

Home About Posts

Everyone who goes to school has ideas about how life could be better. Adults tell you
that school days are the best days of your life and you wonder what the rest of your life
will be like if this is the best! So, I’ve decided to write about my ideal school and I’d like
to hear what you think.
First of all, the school day is too long. It would be better if we had shorter days because
we’d stay focused more easily. We could start at 10 and finish at 3 so that would mean
three or four lessons in the morning and three in the afternoon, none of which would be
compulsory of course! There wouldn’t be so much homework so we could actually have
some free time. As everyone knows, teenagers need a lot of sleep!
As for subjects, I’d give people more choice. Of course it would be almost impossible
to get a job if you can’t read or write but I don’t see why we have to learn about history
and chemistry and stuff like that. I’d like to have a school system where we could do
more creative stuff like photography and art and even cooking because not everyone is
good at academic subjects.
What’s more, we never do anything outside the classroom, so I’d introduce the idea
of one class activity a month away from the school. That way we’d get to know our
teachers better and they’d get to know us. The class could decide which activity to do.
And finally, what about life after school? What are we taught about that?! We don’t
know how to manage money, how to apply for a job, what to do in an interview … so
come on teachers, it’s not just about doing homework and passing exams!

Choose the correct answer: a, b or c.

0 Karen believes that school days 3 Karen thinks the current school timetable is
a are the best days of your life. a too creative.
b might be the best days of your life. b too full of subjects.
c are definitely not the best days of your life. c too academic.
1 Karen believes that the students should go to 4 Karen thinks that teachers should
a lessons either in the morning or the afternoon. a organise more activities in the classroom.
b only the lessons they’re interested in going to. b take their students out on more activities.
c all the lessons there are during the school day. c know which activities the students in their class
2 Karen suggests that if students had less homework would like.
a they might have more time to complete it. 5 At her school, Karen wants to get more
b they might get more sleep. a preparation for her future.
c they might waste the extra free time. b help with her homework.
c opportunities to take exams.

at the bottle bank. We cut the tops and bottoms off and use them in the garden.
They’re great for protecting small plants when you first put them in the ground
because the animals can’t get to them.
2 James We live in a village and there are lots of forests around us so we’re very lucky because
we can go out and look for bits of wood and branches that have blown down. We
would never cut wood but if it’s on the ground, then we pick it up and bring it home
and we burn it in our wood burner which keeps the house nice and warm.

3 Stephen We went on a course last year which was all about living off the land. It’s amazing how
much stuff there is to eat out there if you know what you’re looking for. The obvious
things are mushrooms and berries, like blackberries, but there are also a lot of wild
plants which you can use. Not many people know about them so there is plenty there.

4 Julia
We are vegetarians so we don’t eat meat but we do keep chickens for their eggs and
we feed them with our leftover food. Basically, we don’t throw anything away but we
give it to the chickens. The only stuff we put in the rubbish is stuff that we can’t recycle.

5 Peter
There are a couple of things that help us to save both money and resources. We use
the washing machine at night when electricity is cheaper and we have showers not
baths as showers use much less water. We also recycle ‘grey’ water in the garden.

What a load of rubbish!

Have you ever thought about the amount of stuff we throw away every single day? The next
time you’re in town, have a look around. There’s rubbish everywhere, from cartons on the
street outside fast food restaurants to empty drink cans simply thrown away.
We should be proud of our town so why don’t we do something about this problem?
Let’s start a recycling campaign. We can pick up anything that’s been dropped on the streets
and take it to the recycling centre.
You can also help by organising a team of rubbish collectors – four people in each, say,
to spend a couple of hours in town, picking up all the litter. We’ll provide bags and gloves
so all you need is enthusiasm!
But why stop there? Our school needs to raise money so let’s help by organising an end-of-
term sale. We can collect books, CDs and DVDs as well as clothes and we can use the money
to buy some sports equipment for the school.
Mrs Jones is allowing us to store all our donations at the school until our sale so please get
started now. Take some leaflets and tell everyone you know to follow us on social network
sites and Twitter. Together we can make a difference!
School recycling team.
