The industrial visit to BEML factory on December 18, 2021 was organized by the Society of Mechanical Engineers at the Mechanical Engineering Department in collaboration with Bharat Earth Movers Limited. The visit showcased BEML's products for military, industrial, and civilian purposes and their journey since 1964. Students observed models of metro coaches and learned about their assembly, from the initial bogies to wiring, materials used, and final transport. Engineers explained the manufacturing process and answered students' questions enthusiastically.

By Avni Sharma The industrial visit to BEML was organized under the collaboration of the Society of Mechanical Engineers under the Mechanical Engineering Department and Bharat Earth Movers Limited took place in the BEML factory on 18th December, 2021. The visit was a part of one of the various events organized under SME every year. Such events are organized every year with the objective to provide a platform for students to learn more about the current requirements and research going on in the industry. BEML had organized this event under “AZADI KA AMRIT MAHOTSAV” to commemorate 75 years of India’s Independence and showcase “BEML’s Journey Since 1964”. This event was organized to show the youth of the country and budding engineers as to what and how they have designed and manufactured products for both the military, industrial and civilian purposes. The first half of the visit consisted of pictures and videos outlining the product profile of BEML and outlining their outreach. They also showed us models of the METRO coaches that they were supplying to Delhi, Bangalore and Bombay. The engineers explained the difference between overhead electrical lines used on Delhi and Bombay and the electrical lines used in Bangalore. Explained how the driverless METRO was being made for Bombay. In the second half of the visit, we were given a tour of the factory. The engineers showed us how the bogie’s looked before the coaches were assembled, how load testing are done on them. Then we were showed how the coaches looked during assembly. What materials are used for the flooring, the walls, the roofs. How insulation is provided, how wiring inside the coaches is done. They also showed us the robots they used for 30% to 40% of the welding’s. How the coaches are assembled and transported. They also showed us hoe they transport trains for Indian Railway’s. The entire tour was interactive. The engineers were encouraging and enthusiastic. They were more than happy to answer our questions and give out extra information about the materials used and other insights. We had a good a experience and learned a lot from this visit.
