WHAT IS CIVIL ENGINEERING?

▪ Civil engineering is a discipline that deals with the design, construction, and
maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including, but not
limited to:
- Buildings, Shopping Malls, Stadiums.
- Highways, Roads, bridges, railway, airports, seaports.
- Dams and falaj.
- Water treatment plants, solid waste disposal.

▪ This infrastructure must be safe, functional, elegant, economic & environmentally

friendly.

WHAT IS CIVIL ENGINEERING?

▰ Civil engineering involves:
➢ Site investigations & feasibility studies
➢ Structural design & analysis
➢ Construction & facilities maintenance

▰ Specialization in Civil Engineering Program:

➢ Structural Engineering
➢ Materials Engineering
➢ Geotechnical Engineering
➢ Transportation Engineering
➢ Environmental Engineering
➢ Water Resources Engineering
➢ Coastal Engineering
➢ Surveying and Geomatics
➢ Construction Engineering & Management
Introduction to Engineering, ENGR 1501 8

Structural Engineering
➢ Design of new structures
➢ Upgrading existing structures
➢ Intelligent use of new technologies and materials to control
structural behavior
➢ Structures include buildings, bridges, tunnels, dams, offshore
platforms, transmission towers, and other specialized facilities

Materials Engineering

 Discipline that deals with the

properties and Performance of
materials used in Civil
Engineering.

 Testing the materials to be used

 Make sure to select the right material

 Improve the quality of materials used

Geotechnical Engineering
• Geotechnical engineering deals with :
• Foundations
• Slopes
• Retaining Structures
• Highway pavement design
• Embankments and earth dams
• Tunnels, underground structures
and deep cuts
• Soils & Rocks,

➢ Technical information obtained from the sciences of

geology, material testing, and hydraulics is applied in the
design of foundations and structures to ensure safety and
economy of construction.
Introduction to Engineering, ENGR 1501 11

Transportation Engineering
➢ The field of Transportation
Engineering is the science of
safe and efficient movement
of people and goods.

▪ This include design of Roads, Airports, Railway & Ports.

▪ It involves three major components includes - planning,

design and operations.
Introduction to Engineering, ENGR 1501 12

Environmental Engineering
• It is related to the :
• Science of waste management of all types,
• Purification of water,
• Cleaning of contaminated areas,
• Reduction of pollution,
• and industrial ecology.
• Technical data obtained due to environmental engineering
assists the policy makers in making decisions related to
environmental issues.

Water Resources Engineering

Introduction to Engineering, ENGR 1501 14

Coastal Engineering

➢ Is the study of the

processes ongoing at the
shoreline and construction
within the coastal zone.

▪ The field involves aspects of nearshore oceanography, marine

geology, and civil engineering, often directed at combating
erosion of coasts due to Waves, and the wind.

CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING
▰ A construction engineer who is tasked with:
- The oversight and management of a large-scale,
complex construction project
- Strategic design and completion of the project
- Manage building crews
- Ensure the project is successful
- On-site management
▰A construction engineer may devise the plans for roads,
bridges, pipelines, sewage systems, railroads and more.
